Outline and explain two reasons why poverty may persist in contemporary UK society.

What is expected in the answer?
Outline and explain means the student should identify two distinct explanations for why poverty continues over time and then develop each sociologically. For 10 marks, two substantial paragraphs are enough. There is no Item, no need for a conclusion, and students do not gain separate marks for evaluation.
The important word is persist. Students should explain why poverty continues to be reproduced, rather than simply define poverty or describe which groups are poor.
