AQA A-Level Sociology | Paper 2 | 2027 Predicted Paper | Section B: The Media Mark Scheme
Question 19
Outline and explain two ways in which the media may represent people with disabilities.
[10 marks]
What is expected in the answer?
Outline and explain requires students to identify two distinct ways people with disabilities may be represented in media content and develop each sociologically. For 10 marks, two developed paragraphs are preferable to several brief stereotypes. There is no Item, no requirement for an introduction or conclusion, and no separate marks for evaluation.
The question is specifically about representations of disability. Students should therefore do more than describe disability itself. They need to identify patterns in how disabled people are portrayed and explain the meanings or assumptions contained in those representations.
AQA explicitly includes media representations of age, social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and disability in the Media specification. Published representation mark schemes also reward concepts such as stereotypes, under-representation, symbolic annihilation, stigmatised identity, diversity and the role of new media.
