Can you go to university with a BTEC?

Yes. BTEC Level 3 qualifications are accepted by many UK universities and can provide a direct route into a wide range of degree courses.

However, BTEC entry requirements are not always as simple as achieving a particular grade.

A university may consider:

• The size of the qualification

• Your BTEC subject

What Is a BTEC?

BTEC qualifications are career-focused qualifications awarded by Pearson. They combine subject knowledge with applied, practical and work-related learning.

BTECs are available at different levels. For university entry, the most relevant qualifications are normally BTEC Level 3 Nationals.

UCAS describes the levels as follows:

• BTEC Levels 1 and 2 are at GCSE level

• BTEC Level 3 Nationals are at A-level standard

• BTEC Higher Nationals at Levels 4 and 5 correspond to higher education study

Level 3 BTECs are available in different sizes, ranging from a Certificate to an Extended Diploma.

A BTEC being at the same qualification level as an A level does not mean that every university treats the two qualifications identically. Universities decide whether the content of a particular BTEC provides suitable preparation for each degree.

Can You Go to University With a BTEC?

Yes. Pearson describes BTEC Nationals as widely recognised for entry to higher education, and universities including King’s College London, Manchester and Queen Mary publish specific BTEC admissions guidance.

Your options depend on:

• The degree you want to study

• The university

• The BTEC subject

• The size of your BTEC

• Your predicted or achieved grade

• Any additional qualifications you are taking

For example, a university might accept a BTEC Extended Diploma in Business for a business management degree but require A-level Mathematics alongside a BTEC for engineering.

Another university might accept Applied Science for biomedical science but not Health and Social Care.

The important question is therefore not simply:

Does the university accept BTECs?

Instead, ask:

Does this specific course accept my exact BTEC qualification and subject?

Which BTEC Qualifications Are Used for University Entry?

The main qualifications used for undergraduate admission are Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals.

UCAS lists five common sizes:

These comparisons refer to the approximate size of the qualifications. They do not mean the subject content or assessment is identical to an A-level programme.

BTEC National Certificate

The National Certificate is approximately half the size of one A level.

It is usually studied alongside other Level 3 qualifications. On its own, it is unlikely to provide enough study volume for entry to a standard undergraduate degree.

A university may ask for the Certificate alongside:

• Two or three A levels

• A larger BTEC

• Other accepted Level 3 qualifications

BTEC National Extended Certificate

The Extended Certificate is approximately the size of one A level.

It is commonly studied alongside two A levels. A university might therefore make an offer such as:

Distinction in the BTEC Extended Certificate plus grades BB in two A levels.

Some universities require the BTEC to be in a subject related to the degree.

BTEC National Foundation Diploma

The Foundation Diploma is approximately the size of one and a half A levels.

It normally needs to be combined with one or two additional Level 3 qualifications.

The Foundation Diploma should not be confused with:

• A university foundation year

• A Foundation Degree

• An Art and Design Foundation Diploma

These are different courses and qualifications.

BTEC National Diploma

The National Diploma is approximately the size of two A levels.

Universities commonly consider it alongside one additional A level or another suitable Level 3 qualification.

An offer might ask for:

DD in the BTEC National Diploma plus grade B in one A level.

The additional A level may need to be in a required subject, such as Mathematics.

BTEC National Extended Diploma

The National Extended Diploma is approximately the size of three A levels.

It may be accepted as a complete Level 3 programme without additional A levels, particularly where the BTEC subject is relevant to the degree.

Examples of possible offers include:

• DDD

• DDM

• DMM

• MMM

More competitive courses may require D* grades, specific units or an additional A level despite the size of the Extended Diploma.

Manchester, for example, states that its courses may accept a relevant Extended Diploma on its own, while smaller BTEC qualifications generally need to be combined with other Level 3 qualifications. It also warns that some programmes require specific unit results or additional subjects.

Understanding the Different BTEC Versions

The word BTEC can refer to several different qualification suites.

These include:

• Current or recent BTEC Level 3 Nationals

• Older QCF BTEC Nationals

• BTEC International qualifications

• New BTEC National Alternative Academic Qualifications

• BTEC Tech Awards at Level 1 or Level 2

• BTEC Higher Nationals at Levels 4 and 5

Universities may publish different requirements for each version.

When researching entry requirements, use the complete qualification title shown by your school, college or Pearson. UCAS advises applicants to enter the correct awarding organisation, qualification title, subject and date because many vocational qualifications have similar names.

BTEC Nationals From 2025

New Level 3 BTEC Nationals are being introduced in England as Alternative Academic Qualifications, commonly shortened to AAQs.

The first new Extended Certificates began teaching in September 2025, with Certificate qualifications following from September 2026. They are intended primarily to complement A levels or other Level 3 qualifications within mixed study programmes.

Pearson states that the new BTEC National AAQs receive the same UCAS Tariff points as the corresponding existing BTEC National qualifications. Universities may nevertheless publish separate admissions guidance for the new qualifications.

When applying, check whether your qualification is described as:

• BTEC National

• BTEC National RQF

• BTEC National AAQ

• BTEC National Extended Certificate

• Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification

The qualification number can help an admissions team identify exactly what you are studying.

BTEC Grades Explained

BTEC grades use the following letters:

• P: Pass

• M: Merit

• D: Distinction

• D*: Distinction Star

Larger BTEC qualifications combine several letters.

For example:

• DMM means Distinction, Merit, Merit

• DDM means Distinction, Distinction, Merit

• DDD means three Distinctions

• D*D*D* is the highest Extended Diploma grade

The overall grade is calculated from your performance across the qualification according to Pearson’s grading rules. Universities normally specify the final overall grade they expect, although some also require particular results in named units.

Is DDD the Same as AAA?

A BTEC National Extended Diploma at DDD and three A levels at AAA are both worth 144 UCAS Tariff points.

However, they are not automatically interchangeable.

The Tariff compares the size and level of qualifications for admissions purposes. It does not mean that the courses include the same content or prepare students for the same degree subjects.

A university course asking for AAA may:

• Accept DDD in a relevant BTEC

• Require D*DD instead

• Accept DDD plus A-level Mathematics

• Accept only a particular BTEC subject

• Require named BTEC units

• Not accept the BTEC route

Always check the BTEC section of the course entry requirements rather than converting the A-level grades yourself.

There is no exact BTEC Extended Diploma grade worth 120 points, which is the Tariff total for BBB. DMM is worth 112 points and DDM is worth 128 points.

Do All Universities Accept BTECs?

No. Many universities accept BTECs for a wide range of courses, but acceptance varies by course rather than simply by institution.

A university may accept BTECs for:

• Business

• Sociology

• Criminology

• Nursing

• Education

• Sport

• Art and design

The same university may restrict or reject them for:

• Medicine

• Dentistry

• Mathematics

• Highly theoretical computer science courses

Queen Mary states that it considers Level 3 BTEC applicants for the majority of its undergraduate courses, but its individual Psychology course for 2027 states that BTECs are not considered. This demonstrates why applicants must check the course page, not just the university’s general policy.

Does Your BTEC Subject Matter?

Yes. Many courses require your BTEC to be in a relevant subject.

Manchester states that the Extended Diploma, Diploma, Foundation Diploma and Extended Certificate should normally be in a subject relevant to the chosen course. Some courses also require specific units or additional qualifications.

A business course may accept almost any suitable BTEC, while biomedical science may require Applied Science specifically. Never assume that any Level 3 BTEC will satisfy the requirement.

Do Particular BTEC Units Matter?

Sometimes.

A university may require you to have completed particular units because they contain knowledge considered essential for the degree.

An engineering course could look for units covering:

• Calculus

• Further engineering mathematics

• Mechanical principles

• Electrical principles

• Engineering design

• Applied physics

A science course might look for:

• Chemistry

• Biology

• Physiology

• Laboratory techniques

• Scientific investigation

• Mathematics for science

Queen Mary publishes course-specific BTEC guidance that names particular engineering and mathematics units for some programmes. Manchester similarly warns that some departments specify required achievement in individual units or modules.

Check the unit list before applying, particularly if your college has offered optional units.

Can You Combine a BTEC With A Levels?

Yes. Mixed programmes are widely used for university entry.

Common combinations include:

• One BTEC Extended Certificate plus two A levels

• One BTEC Diploma plus one A level

• One BTEC Foundation Diploma plus one or two A levels

• One BTEC Extended Diploma plus an additional A level

Pearson’s new BTEC National AAQs are designed to complement A levels and other vocational qualifications. Universities such as Manchester publish specific entry combinations for different BTEC sizes.

Example Combination

A student achieves:

• BTEC Extended Certificate at Distinction: 48 points

• A-level Psychology at grade B: 40 points

• A-level Sociology at grade B: 40 points

The total is:

48 + 40 + 40 = 128 UCAS Tariff points.

This could meet a general offer of 128 points, provided the university accepts all three qualifications and subjects.

A course requiring A-level Biology would not necessarily accept this combination, even though the overall points total is high enough.

When Is an Additional A Level Required?

An additional A level is often required when the BTEC does not cover a compulsory academic subject.

This is particularly common for:

• Mathematics

• Engineering

• Economics

• Physics

• Chemistry

• Some computer science courses

For example, the University of Bristol’s 2027 Engineering Mathematics course lists an Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma at DDD alongside A-level Mathematics at grade A. Manchester’s Aerospace Engineering course requires a relevant Extended Diploma at DDD plus A-level Mathematics at A*. Smaller BTECs may need to be accompanied by both Mathematics and Physics.

Do not assume that an engineering or science-based BTEC automatically replaces A-level Mathematics.

BTEC Entry Requirements by Degree Subject

Business and Management

Business and management courses commonly accept BTEC qualifications.

A university might accept:

• DDD or DDM in a Business Extended Diploma

• DD in a Business Diploma plus an A level

• A Distinction in an Extended Certificate plus two A levels

• A relevant combination worth a stated number of Tariff points

Some courses accept a BTEC in any subject, while others require Business or a related area.

The University of Southampton, for example, publishes a mixed offer of DD in a BTEC Diploma plus grade B in one A level for its Education course. Other business programmes may specify that the BTEC itself must be in Business.

Psychology

BTEC acceptance for psychology varies considerably.

Some universities accept:

• Applied Science

• Health and Social Care

• Psychology-related vocational qualifications

• Any BTEC alongside a required science A level

Other psychology departments do not consider BTECs.

Queen Mary’s Psychology course for 2027 does not accept BTEC qualifications, while Manchester’s general admissions guidance shows that applied qualifications may be considered for some psychology-related routes. Applicants must therefore check the individual course.

You should also check whether the degree requires:

• GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or 6

• A science qualification

• Particular research or mathematics units

• British Psychological Society accreditation

Nursing

BTEC qualifications are commonly accepted for nursing, particularly when the qualification is in Health and Social Care or Applied Science.

For example, the University of Brighton lists DMM to MMM in a health or science subject for Adult Nursing entry in 2027. The course also considers A levels and other Level 3 qualifications.

Nursing applicants may also need:

• GCSE English and Mathematics

• A science qualification

• An interview

• Occupational health clearance

• A DBS or equivalent safeguarding check

• Evidence of suitability for professional practice

A BTEC meeting the academic grade requirement does not remove these additional conditions.

Engineering

Engineering entry requirements are often more restrictive because of the mathematical and scientific content of the degree.

Universities may accept:

• An Engineering Extended Diploma

• Applied Science with suitable units

• A BTEC combined with A-level Mathematics

• A BTEC combined with Mathematics and Physics

• Specific Distinction grades in mathematics units

Manchester’s Materials Science and Engineering guidance states that a BTEC and A-level combination must cover sufficient Mathematics and Science. Its Aerospace Engineering course requires additional A-level Mathematics even from Extended Diploma applicants.

If you want to study engineering, check your likely university requirements before choosing your Level 3 programme.

Computer Science

Computer science requirements vary according to how mathematical the degree is.

Some courses accept:

• Computing

• Information Technology

• Engineering

• Applied Science

• A general BTEC with suitable supporting qualifications

More theoretical courses may require A-level Mathematics regardless of your BTEC subject.

A BTEC in Information Technology may be suitable for one computing degree but insufficient for another course with a heavy focus on algorithms, discrete mathematics or artificial intelligence.

Biomedical Science and Other Laboratory Sciences

Applied Science is the BTEC most commonly considered for laboratory-based degrees.

Universities may examine:

• Whether Biology and Chemistry were included

• The particular optional units completed

• Your grades in laboratory units

• Your overall BTEC grade

• GCSE Mathematics and English

• Whether you also studied A-level Chemistry or Biology

Health and Social Care may not be accepted as a substitute for Applied Science because the two programmes cover different content.

Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Many law, humanities and social science courses accept a broader range of BTEC subjects.

The university may be more interested in your overall grade and evidence that you can:

• Read complex material

• Build an argument

• Write clearly

• Analyse evidence

• Study independently

However, highly selective courses may prefer particular academic qualifications or require the BTEC to be combined with A levels.

Always check whether the course accepts an Extended Diploma alone or asks for an additional essay-based qualification.

Art, Design, Media and Performing Arts

Creative courses often accept relevant BTEC qualifications such as:

• Fashion

A portfolio, audition or showreel may be as important as the overall BTEC grade.

The entry requirements might ask for a particular grade alongside satisfactory performance at an audition or portfolio review.

Can You Study Medicine With a BTEC?

BTEC acceptance for medicine is very limited and varies between medical schools.

Many standard-entry medicine courses do not accept a BTEC as a replacement for the required A-level sciences. Imperial College London’s 2027 Medicine course states that the qualification is not accepted, while Brunel also lists BTEC as not accepted for its Medicine MBBS.

There are occasional combined routes. Oxford states that applicants may offer two A levels in Chemistry and another accepted science alongside a BTEC Level 3 qualification in another subject, with a required BTEC grade of D*DD or equivalent. It does not accept Health and Social Care or Sport and Exercise Science BTECs in place of required science subjects.

Medicine applicants must check every medical school individually for:

• Accepted qualification combinations

• Required A-level sciences

• GCSE requirements

• UCAT requirements

• Resit policies

• Contextual or gateway routes

• Interview selection rules

Do not rely on a general list of universities that accept BTECs, as medicine policies are frequently much narrower than general university policies.

Can You Study Dentistry With a BTEC?

Dentistry normally requires strong academic science preparation, and BTEC-only routes are uncommon.

Dental schools may insist on A-level Chemistry and Biology or another accepted science. Some may consider a BTEC only when it is combined with the required A levels.

Check the exact requirements for each dental school and intended entry year before submitting an application.

Do Russell Group Universities Accept BTECs?

Some do, for some courses.

Russell Group membership does not create one shared admissions policy. Each university and academic department sets its own requirements.

King’s College London accepts BTEC Nationals and BTEC Internationals for suitable courses, while Manchester publishes detailed requirements covering Extended Diplomas, Diplomas, Foundation Diplomas, Extended Certificates and new AAQs. Both universities also have courses where additional A levels or particular subjects are required.

The course matters much more than the university group.

Do BTECs Count Towards UCAS Points?

Yes, eligible Level 3 BTEC National qualifications carry UCAS Tariff points.

However, not every university uses the Tariff. A course may set its requirement as:

• 112 UCAS points

• DMM in a BTEC Extended Diploma

• DMM in Applied Science

• DD plus grade B in one A level

• Distinction in an Extended Certificate plus BB at A level

These conditions are not necessarily interchangeable.

Do GCSE Requirements Still Apply?

Yes.

A BTEC offer may be accompanied by GCSE conditions such as:

• GCSE English Language at grade 4

• GCSE Mathematics at grade 4 or 5

• GCSE Science at grade 4 or above

• Five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4

A student could achieve DDD in an Extended Diploma but still fail to meet the complete entry requirements because of a missing GCSE Mathematics condition.

Healthcare, teaching, psychology, engineering and science courses may set higher or more specific GCSE requirements.

Do Universities Accept BTEC Resits?

Resit policies vary.

A university may accept:

• Resubmitted internal assignments completed under Pearson rules

• Retaken externally assessed units

• A qualification completed over a longer period

• An improved overall grade

Highly competitive courses may place limits on resits or consider the original performance alongside the final result.

Check the university’s resit policy, particularly for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and other competitive professional courses.

Entry requirements for a foundation year may be lower or more flexible than entry to the first year of the standard degree.

Can You Apply With Lower BTEC Grades?

You can apply, but an offer is not guaranteed.

BTEC titles are similar. Enter the exact qualification, subject, awarding organisation and date in your UCAS application.

Looking Only at UCAS Points

The university may require a specific BTEC subject, grade or unit combination.
