The process begins with information from the offences rather than a pre-existing offender type.
The sequence is:

This is bottom-up reasoning because the profile is constructed from evidence associated with the individual series of offences.
It differs from classifying offenders using pre-existing types [Lesson 1: The typology approach to offender profiling], where the profiler attempts to place the offender into an organised or disorganised category.
AQA mark schemes describe geographical profiling as using crime-scene locations and local knowledge to provide clues about an offender’s life, work, habits and method of travel.
Spatial Decision-Making
Spatial decision-making refers to the choices an offender makes about where to travel and offend.
Offence locations are unlikely to be completely random. They may reflect the offender’s:

Distance Decay
Distance decay is the principle that the likelihood of offending generally decreases as distance from the offender’s base increases.
In simple terms:
Offenders are usually more likely to commit offences at relatively accessible locations than at increasingly distant ones.
This may occur because distant offending requires:
More travel.
Greater planning.
More money.
More time.
Greater knowledge of unfamiliar areas.
A pattern based on distance decay might show:
Several offences in a familiar region.

Distance Decay Is a Probability
Distance decay does not mean that every offence will occur closer to the offender’s base than the previous offence.

The value of the theory is that it narrows a large geographical search to a smaller region.

Centre of Gravity
The centre of gravity is the central area of a pattern of offence locations.
The principle assumes that the distribution may be organised around a meaningful location such as:

An offender whose offences surround their home may produce a cluster with the home somewhere near the centre.
However, the central area is not necessarily the exact home address.

Applying Circle Theory
Consider this pattern:

This example shows why geographical profiling should not assume that the centre of offences always reveals the home address.

Investigators may ask whether the offender appears to know:
Quiet routes.
Areas without surveillance.
When a location is unoccupied.
Where potential victims are found.

A geographical profiler might infer that:
The offender has familiarity with the town centre.
The station may be an important anchor point.
The offender may commute into the area by public transport.
The timing may fit an after-work or evening travel routine.
Knowledge of closing times suggests regular experience of the area.
A home outside the offence circle remains possible.

Applying a Marauding Pattern
Eight burglaries form a rough circle around a residential estate. Most are within three kilometres of the estate, and the offender uses narrow footpaths that are not visible from main roads.
Possible application:
The residential estate may lie near the centre of gravity.
Short distances support the least-effort principle.
The offender may be a marauder operating from within the area.
Use of hidden footpaths suggests local knowledge.
The offender may travel on foot or by bicycle.
Local residents and workers may be prioritised.
Applying a Commuting Pattern
Five linked thefts occur around an airport. There are no similar offences in nearby residential areas. Each offence happens shortly after an early train arrives from another city.
Possible application:
The airport is the target area rather than necessarily the offender’s home.
The offender may commute into the area.
The train schedule may be linked to the offender’s travel.
The airport provides a concentration of suitable targets.
Investigators should consider suspects living outside the offence circle.
Transport records and work routines may be more useful than searching only nearby homes.
Outlying Offences
An outlier is a location that falls well outside the main cluster.
An outlying offence may indicate:
A special opportunity.

Geographical profiling and smallest space analysis are both linked with data-driven profiling, but they are not the same.

The most balanced conclusion is that geographical profiling can narrow an investigation and generate useful hypotheses. It cannot identify an offender by itself and should always be combined with behavioural and physical evidence.
