Marking Comparisons

A comparison question requires direct links.

A student may lose marks by writing:

  • One section about Topic A

  • One section about Topic B

  • No explicit similarities or differences

Look for language such as:

  • Both

  • Similarly

  • However

  • In contrast

  • Whereas

  • Unlike

Check whether the same comparison dimension is used for both topics.


Marking Explanations

An explanation should show how or why.

Look for a logical chain:

Point → reason → consequence

For example:

Increasing temperature gives particles more kinetic energy. They move faster and collide more frequently. A greater proportion of collisions also have enough energy to overcome the activation energy, increasing the reaction rate.

A statement such as “temperature makes reactions faster” is correct but underdeveloped.


Marking Evaluation

Evaluation should do more than label a strength or limitation.

  • A balanced judgement where required

The study lacks ecological validity.

Developed

The study may lack ecological validity because participants completed an artificial task. Their behaviour may differ in a real social situation, reducing the extent to which the findings can explain everyday conformity.

Marking Judgements

A conclusion should not simply repeat earlier points.

A strong judgement:

  • Answers the question directly

  • Weighs the evidence

  • Explains which factor is more important

  • Recognises relevant conditions

  • Follows from the argument

Do not award the highest level to an answer whose conclusion is unsupported.

Marking a Predicted Paper Step by Step

Why the Total Score Is Not Enough

A score such as 72% may look encouraging, but it does not tell you:

  • Whether an essay was generously marked

  • Whether the same mistake appeared several times

The analysis is more valuable than the headline score.


Should You Convert the Mark into a Grade?

You may use published boundaries from a relevant series as a rough reference.

However:

  • Grade boundaries vary

  • Predicted papers may differ in difficulty

  • Practice conditions may not match the exam

  • Subjective marking may be uncertain

Focus mainly on:

A practice grade is not a guarantee of the final result.

How to Mark Your Own Practice Paper: Final Advice

Marking a practice paper is not simply about finding your score.

It should answer three questions:

  1. What do I know?

  2. Why did I lose marks?

  3. What will I do differently next?

Use the mark scheme carefully.

Be strict about accuracy, application and development, but fair about alternative wording and valid approaches.

For levels-based questions:

  • Read the whole response

  • Use the assessment objectives

  • Choose the best-fit level

  • Decide where the answer sits within that level

  • Check for restrictions

  • Ask a teacher when the judgement is uncertain


Record marks by both topic and question type.

Then separate:

  • Knowledge mistakes

  • Understanding mistakes

  • Retrieval failures

  • Application errors

  • Command-word problems

  • Calculation mistakes

  • Timing issues

  • Careless errors


Turn each important weakness into a specific improvement task.

Do not write:

Revise more.

Write:

Review normative social influence, retrieve the definition and complete three scenario questions by Thursday.
