Technology can change how work is organised and carried out.
Within the AQA material, technological change includes developments such as:

The important sociological question is not simply:
Has technology increased?
It is:
What does technological change do to workers, their skills and the balance of control within the workplace?
Different sociological perspectives give very different answers.

Technological change does not necessarily have one effect on skill.
AQA's 2024 question was built around precisely this issue. Its mark scheme recognised:

AQA's 2025 examination then expanded the debate by contrasting greater skills, training and qualifications with continuing de-skilling.

What is de-skilling?
De-skilling occurs when changes to work reduce the level or range of skill required from workers.
The AQA specimen paper gives a particularly clear description. It states that management may introduce technology in order to:
break the work process into a number of unskilled tasks

undermine the position of skilled workers.

Breaking down the work process

A worker possessing expertise that management relies on may hold a stronger workplace position.

then management may become less dependent on the original skilled worker.

De-skilling and alienation

Decision-making is an important part of worker autonomy.

This strengthens the argument that changes in skill are also changes in the experience and control of work.
Technology and surveillance
Technology can also be used to monitor employees.
AQA recognises surveillance technology as an important aspect of changing work.
The 2023 mark scheme identifies the rise of workplace surveillance technology as potentially dehumanising workers.
The 2022 mark scheme similarly links technological surveillance with reduced autonomy.
The causal chain is:
Surveillance technology → closer monitoring of worker activity → increased management control → reduced autonomy
This means technological development can affect power even when it does not directly change occupational skill.
Surveillance and skill are different issues
Be careful not to collapse the two concepts.
De-skilling concerns the level or range of skill required.
Surveillance concerns monitoring and control.

For example, a highly skilled worker could still be closely monitored.
Equally, a worker could experience de-skilling without extensive technological surveillance.

Technology, qualifications and training

The important conclusion is not that one model has completely replaced another.
Instead, sociologists debate the extent of change.

One of the most useful evaluative arguments is that the same technological change does not have to affect every worker in the same way.
For example:

This means de-skilling and upskilling can occur at the same time in different parts of the labour process.

Technology may alter the kinds of jobs available.
AQA's 2023 mark scheme identifies two contrasting effects:
old skills may cease to be required, contributing to unemployment

Positive route

Evaluating the two perspectives
The two explanations should not simply be written one after another.
Use them to test each other.
For example:
Marxist explanations are supported where technology breaks skilled work into narrower tasks and allows management greater control. However, this cannot explain workplaces in which ICT creates new roles and requires workers to acquire additional skills. Post-Fordist arguments may therefore better explain upskilling, although continuing automation and surveillance suggest that technological change has not benefited all workers equally.
That is genuine evaluation.
Technological determinism
AQA's 2025 mark scheme identifies technological determinism as a relevant concept in this area.
The key issue raised by the concept is whether technological development itself determines changes in work.
Sociological explanations can challenge a simple deterministic view by emphasising that the consequences of technology depend on how it is introduced and organised.
For example, technology might be used to:

automate tasks
support flexible working
enable workers to use additional skills.
The technology therefore does not necessarily create one inevitable workplace outcome.

Evaluating evidence about technological change
AQA requires students to examine both evidence and sociological explanations relating to its substantive topic content.
The supplied specification, examination papers, mark schemes and examiner reports provide strong evidence about the types of sociological arguments students are expected to understand, but they do not provide a complete current statistical dataset measuring:
the percentage of UK workers experiencing de-skilling
the percentage experiencing upskilling
the proportion of jobs automated
changes in qualification requirements across all occupations.

How to evaluate the de-skilling thesis
If a question asks whether technology causes de-skilling, consider at least four issues.
1. Does technology simplify workers' tasks?
Production lines, automation and the division of labour may support de-skilling.
2. Does technology create new skills?
