How to Use Flashcards Properly for GCSE and A-Level Revision

Flashcards are one of the most popular revision techniques used by GCSE and A-Level students.

They are portable, easy to organise and suitable for testing a wide range of knowledge. You can use them to learn definitions, formulae, quotations, vocabulary, scientific processes and important examples.


However, simply making flashcards does not guarantee that you will remember the content.

Flashcards work best when they are used for retrieval practice. You should look at the question, attempt to recall the answer and only then turn the card over.

Copying an entire textbook page onto a card, rereading the answers or carrying a large pile around without testing yourself will not make the technique effective.

What Are Revision Flashcards?

A flashcard is a small revision resource with a question, prompt or visual on one side and the answer on the other.

For example:

Front: What is normative social influence?

Back: Conformity caused by the desire to be accepted by a group or avoid social rejection.

The front of the card creates a retrieval prompt. Before turning it over, you must try to produce the answer from memory.

A good flashcard answer should be concise enough to recall and check quickly.

The longer card contains useful information, but it should be divided into several prompts.


Use Bullet Points for Multi-Part Answers

Some answers naturally contain several points.

For example:

Front: What factors affect the rate of diffusion?

Back:

  • Concentration gradient

  • Temperature

  • Surface area

  • Diffusion distance

Bullet points make the answer easier to check.

Make sure you know how many points the card requires before marking yourself correct.

If you remember only two of the four factors, place the card in your partly correct pile.


Question-and-Answer Flashcards

Question-and-answer cards are the most common type.

The front contains a clear question, while the back contains the answer.

Examples include:

Front: What is the formula for kinetic energy?

Back: Kinetic energy = ½ × mass × velocity²

Front: What caused the Wall Street Crash?

Back: Contributing factors included speculation, buying shares on credit, overproduction and falling confidence.

Front: How does social support increase resistance to conformity?

Back: Seeing another person resist provides an independent model and breaks group unanimity.

Questions should be specific enough to produce a clear answer.


Write Questions That Require Recall

Avoid prompts that only require recognition.


Weak prompt

Front: Normative social influence

This may encourage you to recognise the phrase without recalling a complete definition.


Stronger prompt

Front: What is normative social influence?

This requires you to produce the meaning.

You can make the question more demanding:

Front: Why does normative social influence lead to conformity?

This tests explanation rather than recognition.


Use Different Levels of Question

Your flashcards should not contain only simple definitions.

Include several types of question.


Knowledge questions

  • What is the definition?

  • What is the formula?

  • Who carried out the study?

  • What are the stages?


Explanation questions

  • Why does this process occur?

  • How does the theory explain the behaviour?

Comparison questions

Flashcards can support deeper revision, but longer application and evaluation should also be practised through full questions.


Definition Flashcards

Definition cards are useful for subjects containing specialist vocabulary.

They work well for:

  • Science terminology

  • Psychological concepts

  • Sociological terms

  • Political vocabulary

  • Business terminology

  • Economic concepts

  • Literary techniques

Diagram Flashcards

Diagram cards can be useful for topics involving structures, processes and visual relationships.

You might place an unlabelled diagram on the front and the completed version on the back.

You could also remove selected labels rather than every label.

This allows you to vary the difficulty.


Graph Flashcards

Graph cards can test:

  • Axis labels

For example:

Front: Draw a demand curve and label both axes.

Formula Flashcards

A basic formula card might be:

Front: What is the formula for density?

Back: Density = mass ÷ volume

You can also create rearrangement cards:

Front: Rearrange density = mass ÷ volume to find mass.

Back: Mass = density × volume


Include Units Where Needed

Formula cards should include the relevant units.

Front: What is the equation for speed, and what are the common units?

Back: Speed = distance ÷ time. Common units include metres per second and kilometres per hour.

Students often lose marks through incorrect or missing units, so units should be part of the retrieval task.


Formula Cards Should Not Replace Calculations

Knowing a formula is only the first step.

You also need to practise:

  • Selecting the correct formula

  • Rearranging it

  • Substituting values

  • Converting units

  • Showing working

  • Checking the final answer

Quotation Flashcards

Quotation cards are useful for English Literature and some essay subjects.

You might use:

Front: Which quotation shows Macbeth’s ambition?

Back: A short, accurately remembered quotation, followed by a brief note on its relevance.

Avoid putting an entire paragraph of analysis on the back.

Instead, create separate cards for:

  • The quotation

  • The theme

  • The technique

  • The possible interpretation

  • A relevant contextual link

This makes the knowledge easier to retrieve and combine in an essay.


Vocabulary Flashcards

Flashcards are particularly useful for learning vocabulary in modern languages.

You can test:

  • English to the target language

  • Target language to English

English-to-target-language recall is often more demanding because you must produce the word rather than recognise it.

Keep the evidence accurate and connected to a clear argument.

Do not try to memorise isolated names without knowing why they matter.


How Many Flashcards Should You Make?

There is no correct number.

The number should depend on:

  • The size of the topic

  • The amount of factual knowledge

  • The level of detail required

  • Whether flashcards suit the content

  • The time available to review them

Avoid creating hundreds of cards simply because the specification is long.

Before making a card, ask:

Is this information suitable for a short retrieval question?

Some information may be better revised using:

Do Not Spend All Your Time Making Flashcards

Avoid Tiny Writing and Overcrowding

If the answer requires tiny writing to fit on the card, it is probably too long.

Use another card or another revision technique.

A flashcard should be readable at a glance.


How to Test Yourself Properly

Use this process:

  1. Look at the front of the card.

  2. Hide the answer.

  3. Say or write your response.

  4. Give yourself enough time to think.

  5. Turn the card over.

  6. Compare the answer carefully.

  7. Decide whether you were correct, partly correct or incorrect.

  8. Place it in the appropriate confidence pile.

  9. Repeat it after a suitable interval.

Do not simply think:

I basically knew that.

Check whether you included every essential point.


Say the Answer Aloud

Saying the answer can make it harder to rely on a vague feeling of familiarity.

It also encourages you to form a complete response before checking.

Writing the answer may be even more useful when:

  • Spelling matters

  • You need to recall a formula

  • You are learning quotations

  • You need exact terminology

  • You want to practise producing a complete sentence


Do Not Check the Answer Too Quickly

Give yourself time to retrieve the information.

Checking after one or two seconds removes much of the challenge.

  • Visualise the diagram

Use Confidence Piles

Separating cards into confidence piles helps you focus revision where it is most needed.

A simple system uses three piles.


Confident

You recalled the full answer accurately and quickly.


Partly confident

You remembered some of the answer but missed details, needed too long or used inaccurate terminology.


Not confident

You could not recall the answer or gave a substantially incorrect response.

Review the weaker piles more frequently.


Be Strict When Sorting Cards

Do not place a card in the confident pile because the answer looked familiar after you turned it over.

To count as confident, you should be able to:

  • Produce the answer before checking

  • Include the essential details

  • Use accurate terminology

  • Recall it without a major prompt

  • Explain it when necessary

If you remembered only part of the answer, place it in the middle pile.


A Four-Pile System

You could use four categories:

  • New

  • Difficult

  • Improving

  • Secure

New cards are reviewed soon after being created.

Difficult cards return frequently.

Improving cards appear every few days.

Secure cards appear after a longer gap.

Keep the system simple enough to use consistently.


What Should Happen to Secure Cards?

Do not remove secure cards forever.

A topic can feel easy immediately after revision but become less secure later.

Move confident cards to a longer review interval rather than discarding them.

For example:

  • Difficult cards: review tomorrow

  • Partly secure cards: review in three days

  • Secure cards: review next week

  • Very secure cards: review in two to four weeks

Using Spaced Repetition with Flashcards

Spaced repetition means reviewing cards at increasing intervals.

A new or difficult card appears frequently.

A secure card appears less often.

You do not need an app.

The app then decides when to show the card again.

Combine flashcards with spaced repetition so that knowledge is reviewed over time rather than tested once.

Most importantly, move beyond the cards.

Use the information in calculations, application questions, essay plans and timed answers. As your exam approaches, complete one of our GCSE or A-Level predicted papers to check whether you can recognise and apply the knowledge without being given a flashcard prompt.

Flashcards can help you remember the building blocks of a subject, but exam questions show whether you can put those blocks together. 🗂️
