Flashcards are one of the most popular revision techniques used by GCSE and A-Level students.
They are portable, easy to organise and suitable for testing a wide range of knowledge. You can use them to learn definitions, formulae, quotations, vocabulary, scientific processes and important examples.
However, simply making flashcards does not guarantee that you will remember the content.
Flashcards work best when they are used for retrieval practice. You should look at the question, attempt to recall the answer and only then turn the card over.
Copying an entire textbook page onto a card, rereading the answers or carrying a large pile around without testing yourself will not make the technique effective.

What Are Revision Flashcards?
A flashcard is a small revision resource with a question, prompt or visual on one side and the answer on the other.

Flashcards can support deeper revision, but longer application and evaluation should also be practised through full questions.
Definition Flashcards
Definition cards are useful for subjects containing specialist vocabulary.
They work well for:
Science terminology

Use Confidence Piles
Separating cards into confidence piles helps you focus revision where it is most needed.
A simple system uses three piles.
Confident
You recalled the full answer accurately and quickly.
Partly confident
You remembered some of the answer but missed details, needed too long or used inaccurate terminology.
Not confident
You could not recall the answer or gave a substantially incorrect response.
Review the weaker piles more frequently.
Be Strict When Sorting Cards
Do not place a card in the confident pile because the answer looked familiar after you turned it over.
To count as confident, you should be able to:
Produce the answer before checking
Include the essential details
Use accurate terminology
Recall it without a major prompt
Explain it when necessary
If you remembered only part of the answer, place it in the middle pile.
A Four-Pile System
You could use four categories:
New
Difficult
Improving
Secure
New cards are reviewed soon after being created.
Difficult cards return frequently.
Improving cards appear every few days.

Do not remove secure cards forever.
