These Observational techniques A-Level Psychology revision notes explain how psychologists study behaviour by watching and recording what people do. You will distinguish naturalistic from controlled observations, covert from overt observations, and participant from non-participant observations. These classifications describe different features of the same study, so one observation may belong to three categories at once. This lesson follows researcher-manipulated and naturally occurring investigations and prepares you to consider the strengths, practical problems and ethical issues associated with observation.

An observation is a research technique in which behaviour is watched and recorded.
Instead of asking participants what they think or remember, the researcher collects evidence about what they actually do.
An observational investigation may examine behaviour such as:
Helping another person.
Aggressive actions.
Social interaction.
Classroom participation.
Use of public spaces.
Communication between members of a group.
Responses to an everyday situation.
Observations can be classified according to three separate questions:
Where and under what conditions does the observation occur?
Naturalistic or controlled.
Do the people being observed know that the observation is taking place?
Covert or overt.
Does the observer join the group or remain separate?
Participant or non-participant.
These distinctions can be combined.
For example, an observation could be:
Naturalistic, covert and non-participant.
Another could be:
Controlled, overt and participant.
The six required observational terms

The terms within each row are alternatives.
However, terms from different rows can be used together.
For example, an observation cannot normally be both naturalistic and controlled at the same time, but it can be naturalistic, covert and participant.
Observation focuses on behaviour
An observation records behaviour that can be seen or heard.
For example, a researcher could record:
How many times a pupil raises their hand.
Whether a commuter gives up a seat.
How often two people speak to one another.
The number of aggressive actions during a game.
How long a child plays cooperatively.
Whether a shopper stops to read a sign.
The researcher cannot directly observe an internal mental process such as:
A thought.
A memory.
A belief.
An intention.
A private emotional experience.
They may observe behaviour associated with the process, but they must infer its psychological meaning.
For example, silence during a group task can be observed. Anxiety cannot be observed directly from silence alone.
Observation and self-report are different
In an observation, researchers record behaviour.
In a self-report, participants describe their own thoughts, feelings or behaviour.

Questionnaires and interviews are explored through questionnaire design and self-report data and structured and unstructured questioning.
Observation and experiment are different
An observation is not automatically an experiment.
An experiment requires the researcher to:
Manipulate an independent variable.
Measure a dependent variable.
Compare conditions.
An observational study may simply record behaviour without introducing any change.
For example:
A researcher records how often pupils speak during ordinary group work.
This is an observation but not an experiment because no independent variable has been manipulated.
However, observation can also be used to measure the dependent variable within an experiment.
For example:
A researcher changes whether a teacher gives praise and then observes pupils’ on-task behaviour.
This study contains:
An experimental manipulation: praise or no praise.
An observational measure: on-task behaviour.
The research method and the data-collection technique should therefore be identified separately.
Naturalistic and controlled observations
What is a naturalistic observation?
A naturalistic observation takes place in the setting where the behaviour would ordinarily occur.
The researcher observes behaviour within the participant’s usual or everyday environment.
Possible settings include:
A school playground.
A classroom during an ordinary lesson.
A workplace.
A café.
A railway station.
A shop.
A family home.
A public park.
The behaviour is not moved into a specially arranged research setting.
Example of a naturalistic observation
A psychologist sits in a public park and records how often adults help children who have dropped an object.
This is naturalistic because:
The observation occurs in a real public park.
People are behaving within an ordinary environment.
The setting has not been created as a controlled testing room.
Whether it is covert, overt, participant or non-participant would depend on further details.
Naturalistic does not mean outdoors
The word naturalistic does not mean that the study must take place in nature or outside.
An observation can be naturalistic in:
A classroom.
A hospital waiting room.
A shop.
An office.
A family home.
The key question is:
Is this the setting in which the behaviour would normally occur?
For example, observing pupils during their usual lesson could be naturalistic even though the study takes place indoors.
Naturally occurring behaviour
Naturalistic observation aims to record behaviour within its ordinary context.
The researcher may observe:
People who would have been present anyway.
Activities that would have occurred without the research.
Interactions that form part of everyday life.
Behaviour influenced by the normal social environment.
This allows researchers to study behaviour within the context in which it naturally develops.
However, the label naturalistic does not tell us whether participants know they are being observed.
A naturalistic observation may be either:
Covert.
Overt.
It may also be either:
Participant.
Non-participant.
What is a controlled observation?
A controlled observation takes place in an environment or situation arranged by the researcher.
The researcher controls at least some features of the setting or procedure.
This may involve:
Asking participants to attend a particular room.
Providing the same materials to everyone.
Giving standardised instructions.
Arranging a particular task.
Controlling the time available.
Controlling who is present.
Recording behaviour using fixed equipment.
The researcher observes behaviour under planned conditions.
Example of a controlled observation
Pairs of children are invited into a room containing the same set of toys. Each pair is given ten minutes to play while researchers record cooperative behaviour.
This is controlled because:
The room has been arranged for the research.
The same toys are provided.
The time period is fixed.
The behaviour occurs under planned conditions.
The children may know they are being observed, making it overt, or they may be unaware of the precise observation, depending on the procedure.
Controlled observation is not automatically an experiment
A controlled observation takes place under planned conditions, but this does not necessarily mean that an independent variable has been manipulated.
Consider this study:
Every participant enters the same room and completes the same group task while cooperation is observed.
The researcher has controlled the setting, but there is only one condition.
This is a controlled observation rather than an experiment.
If the researcher introduced two different conditions, such as:
A cooperative instruction.
A competitive instruction.
and then compared behaviour, the study could also be experimental.
Controlled does not mean completely controlled
A controlled observation gives the researcher more control over the procedure than a naturalistic observation.
However, the researcher may not control every influence on behaviour.
Participants may still differ in:
Personality.
Experience.
Mood.
Motivation.
Relationships with others.
Understanding of the task.
The word controlled describes the organised setting and procedure. It does not mean that every possible extraneous variable has been eliminated.
Naturalistic and controlled observations compared

A direct distinction could state:
A naturalistic observation records behaviour in the environment where it would usually occur, whereas a controlled observation records behaviour in a situation arranged by the researcher.
Identifying a naturalistic observation
Look for details such as:
“During their usual lesson.”
“In a real café.”
“While commuters waited for their normal train.”
“During an ordinary sports match.”
“In the children’s usual playground.”
“Without changing the normal activity.”
These details suggest that the behaviour is being observed in its everyday context.
Identifying a controlled observation
Look for details such as:
“Participants were invited into a research room.”
“The same materials were provided.”
“The task lasted exactly ten minutes.”
“The researcher arranged the seating.”
“All participants received the same instructions.”
“The interaction was recorded in a specially prepared room.”
These details suggest that the procedure or setting was arranged and standardised.
Applying the distinction
Consider this scenario:
A psychologist records conversations between customers waiting in a genuine coffee-shop queue.
This is naturalistic because the customers are observed in the setting where the behaviour ordinarily occurs.
Now consider:
Participants are brought into a room designed to resemble a coffee shop. They wait while another person follows a scripted procedure.
This is controlled because the situation has been arranged by the researcher, even though it has been designed to look realistic.
Covert and overt observations
What is a covert observation?
A covert observation is an observation in which the people being studied are unaware that their behaviour is being observed for research.
The researcher’s role is concealed.
Participants may:
Be completely unaware of the study.
Believe the observer is present for another reason.
Fail to realise that their behaviour is being recorded.
The defining feature is lack of awareness that they are research participants at the time of observation.
Example of a covert observation
A researcher sits among passengers at a railway station and records how often people help someone who appears to have dropped their belongings. The passengers do not know that research is taking place.
This is covert because the people being observed are unaware of the study.
It is also likely to be:
Naturalistic, because it takes place in a real railway station.
Non-participant, if the researcher watches without joining the interaction.
Covert does not mean hidden physically
The observer does not have to be physically concealed.
They may be clearly visible but appear to be:
Another customer.
A passenger.
A member of the public.
A new member of a group.
A person carrying out an ordinary activity.
The observation is covert because the research purpose is hidden, not necessarily because the observer is behind a screen.
Participant awareness in covert observation
Participants who are unaware of the observation cannot knowingly change their behaviour in response to being studied.
However, this also means that they may not have:
Given informed consent.
Been able to exercise an informed right to withdraw during the observation.
Known how their behaviour would be recorded.
Known that data were being collected.
These issues are evaluated in ethical principles and protection of participants and in the next lesson, strengths and limitations of observational methods.
What is an overt observation?
An overt observation is an observation in which participants know that they are being observed for research.
The observer’s role is openly acknowledged.
Participants may be told:
That a researcher is present.
What type of behaviour will be recorded.
That the session is being filmed.
How the information will be used.
That participation is voluntary.
Example of an overt observation
Employees agree to allow a psychologist to observe communication during a team meeting.
This is overt because the employees know that the researcher is observing them.
The observation could still be naturalistic if the meeting is part of their ordinary work.
It might also be:
Participant, if the observer joins the meeting.
Non-participant, if the observer remains separate.
Awareness may vary
Participants may know that they are being observed without knowing the precise hypothesis.
For example, they may be told:
The researcher is studying group interaction.
They may not be told that the researcher is specifically examining disagreement.
The observation is still overt because participants know that research observation is taking place.
The amount of information given may depend on:
The research aim.
Ethical procedures.
The risk of demand characteristics.
Whether withholding some information is justified.
Covert and overt observations compared

A direct distinction could state:
In a covert observation, participants are unaware that research is taking place, whereas participants in an overt observation know that they are being observed.
Behavioural reactivity
Behavioural reactivity occurs when people alter their behaviour because they know they are being observed.
In an overt observation, participants might:
Behave more politely.
Follow rules more carefully.
Avoid socially unacceptable actions.
Try to support the perceived aim.
Become self-conscious.
Act in a way they believe is expected.
The observed behaviour may therefore differ from how they usually behave.
This is closely related to cues that influence participant behaviour.
Covert observation and natural behaviour
Because participants are unaware, covert observation may capture more natural behaviour.
For example, people who do not know that helping is being recorded may respond in the way they normally would.
However, the researcher must still consider:
Whether the setting is public or private.
Whether the behaviour is sensitive.
Whether individuals can be identified.
Whether recording could cause harm.
Whether consent can be obtained afterwards.
Whether debriefing is possible.
The lack of awareness does not automatically make covert research acceptable.
Applying the distinction
Consider this scenario:
A researcher records pupils’ playground behaviour from a classroom window. The pupils do not know that the observation is taking place.
This is covert.
Now consider:
Pupils and parents agree that a researcher may record playground behaviour during break time.
This is overt.
The physical setting is the same, but participant awareness differs.
Participant and non-participant observations
What is a participant observation?
A participant observation is an observation in which the researcher joins the group or activity being studied.
The researcher takes part while also collecting information.
They may participate as:
A member of a club.
A worker within an organisation.
A person attending a meeting.
A customer within a setting.
A participant in a group task.
A member of a community activity.
The observer is involved in the social situation rather than watching entirely from outside.
Example of participant observation
A psychologist joins a weekly activity group and records how established members respond to new arrivals.
This is participant observation because the psychologist takes part in the group.
It could be:
Overt, if members know the psychologist is conducting research.
Covert, if the psychologist’s research role is concealed.
Naturalistic, if the group continues its ordinary activity.
Controlled, if the group activity has been arranged for the study.
Participant observation does not mean the participants observe
The word participant describes the researcher’s role.
It does not mean:
Participants record their own behaviour.
The observer is one of the people being assessed.
Everyone takes turns observing.
The study uses participant self-report.
The researcher participates in the activity while observing other people.
Degrees of participation
Participant involvement may vary.
The observer could:
Join fully in the activity.
Take on a limited role.
Attend meetings but rarely contribute.
Interact only when necessary.
Become accepted as a member of the group.
The greater the involvement, the closer the researcher may become to the participants’ experience.
However, increased involvement may also make accurate and objective recording more
difficult.
Covert participant observation
A participant observation can be covert.
For example:
A researcher joins a group while presenting themselves as an ordinary member. The group does not know that research is taking place.
This is:
Participant, because the researcher joins the group.
Covert, because the research role is hidden.
The setting may be naturalistic if the group already existed independently of the research.
Overt participant observation
A participant observation can also be overt.
For example:
Members of a support group know that a researcher is studying group interaction. The researcher attends sessions and participates in activities.
This is:
Participant, because the researcher joins the activity.
Overt, because the group knows about the research.
Participant does not automatically mean covert.
What is a non-participant observation?
A non-participant observation is an observation in which the researcher does not join the activity or group being studied.
The observer remains separate.
They may observe:
From the side of a room.
Through a window.
Through recordings.
From a public location.
Using an observation platform.
Through live video.
The researcher watches and records rather than becoming a member of the group.
Example of non-participant observation
A psychologist sits at the back of a classroom and records how often pupils contribute to discussion.
This is non-participant because the psychologist does not join the lesson as a pupil or teacher.
It is overt if the class knows the observer’s purpose.
It may be naturalistic if the lesson continues in its usual form.
Non-participant does not mean no researcher is present
The observer may be physically present and visible.
The term means that the researcher is not taking part in the activity.
For example:
Sitting beside a football pitch and recording behaviour is non-participant.
Joining one of the football teams would be participant.
The distinction concerns involvement, not visibility.
Observation using recordings
A researcher may analyse a recording rather than watching the behaviour live.
This is usually non-participant because the researcher does not join the activity being observed.
However, researchers must still consider:
How the recording was obtained.
Whether participants knew about it.
Whether consent was given.
Whether the camera affected behaviour.
Whether important behaviour occurred outside the camera’s view.

A direct distinction could state:
In participant observation, the researcher joins the group or activity being studied, whereas a non-participant observer remains separate and records behaviour from outside it.
Applying the distinction
Consider this scenario:
A researcher becomes a temporary member of a drama group and takes part in rehearsals while studying group leadership.
This is participant observation.
Now consider:
A researcher watches the rehearsals from the auditorium and does not join the group.
This is non-participant observation.
The same behaviour and setting can be studied using either observer role.
Combining observational classifications
The classifications are independent dimensions
The three observational distinctions concern different features.

For example:
The study was a naturalistic, covert, non-participant observation.

Possible combinations
There are several possible combinations.

Not every combination will be equally practical or ethically acceptable.
The classification describes the procedure. Evaluation considers whether the procedure is justified.
Classification example 1
A researcher observes customers in a real supermarket. Customers do not know that helping behaviour is being recorded. The researcher watches from a nearby area and does not interact.
This is:
Naturalistic, because the supermarket is a genuine everyday setting.
Covert, because customers do not know about the observation.
Non-participant, because the researcher does not join the activity.
Classification example 2
Participants agree to attend a research room and complete a planned team-building task. A researcher sits away from the group and records communication.
This is:
Controlled, because the situation is arranged.
Overt, because participants know about the observation.
Non-participant, because the researcher remains separate.
Classification example 3
A psychologist openly joins the ordinary meetings of a community group. Members know that group decision-making is being studied.
This is:
Naturalistic, because the ordinary group meetings are observed.
Overt, because members know about the research.
Participant, because the psychologist joins the meetings.
Classification example 4
A researcher secretly joins an existing online gaming group and takes part while recording patterns of cooperation.
This is:
Naturalistic, if the group would have existed and played normally without the study.
Covert, because members do not know the researcher’s role.
Participant, because the observer joins the activity.
The researcher would need to consider substantial ethical issues involving consent, privacy and deception.
A method for classifying observations
Use the following three-step method.
Step 1: Identify the setting
Ask:
Would this activity have taken place here in this form without the researcher arranging it?
Yes: likely naturalistic.
No, the researcher arranged the situation: likely controlled.
Step 2: Identify participant awareness
Ask:
Do the people being observed know that research observation is taking place?
No: covert.
Yes: overt.
Step 3: Identify observer involvement
Ask:
Does the observer join the group or activity?
Yes: participant.
No: non-participant.

Avoid classifying from one detail alone
A study taking place in a school is not automatically naturalistic.
Ask whether the activity is:
A normal lesson.
A specially arranged task.
A researcher who is visible is not automatically overt.
Ask whether people know that the visible person is conducting research.
A researcher who speaks to participants is not automatically a participant observer.
Ask whether the researcher actually joins the group or activity being studied.
Observation procedures
Deciding what to record
Researchers need to decide which behaviours will be recorded.
A vague aim such as:
Observe aggression.
is difficult to use consistently.
The researcher must decide which visible actions count as aggression.
These might include behaviours such as:
Hitting.
Pushing.
Taking an object by force.
Shouting a specified insult.
This process requires operationalisation, which means defining behaviour clearly enough to be identified and recorded.
Behavioural categories and recording methods are explored fully in behavioural categories, event sampling and time sampling.
Observable behaviour
A suitable observational category should refer to something that can be identified from behaviour.
For example:

The observer should not record private mental states as though they were directly visible.
Observer judgement
Some behaviours are easier to identify than others.
For example:
Counting hand raises is relatively straightforward.
Deciding whether someone is “angry” requires greater interpretation.
Where categories require subjective judgement, different observers may classify the same behaviour differently.
Researchers may therefore need:
Clear definitions.
Training.
Practice observations.
More than one observer.
Checks of agreement.
These issues are studied further through consistency between observers and measurements.
Recording behaviour
Behaviour may be recorded using:
Frequency counts.
Duration measures.
Checklists.
Rating scales.
Written notes.
Audio recordings.
Video recordings.
The chosen method should match the behaviour.
For example:
Frequency may suit hand raising.
Duration may suit time spent on task.
A checklist may suit several defined social behaviours.
The AQA course treats these decisions as part of observational design rather than the classification of the observation itself.
Choosing between observational types
When naturalistic observation may be suitable
A naturalistic observation may be suitable when the researcher wants to know how people behave:
In their ordinary environment.
During a genuine social interaction.
Without an artificial task.
In response to natural contextual influences.
For example, a psychologist investigating playground cooperation may prefer an ordinary school break to a specially created play session.
When controlled observation may be suitable
A controlled observation may be suitable when the researcher needs:
The same materials for every participant.
The same opportunity for behaviour to occur.
A fixed period of observation.
Consistent instructions.
Easier comparison between participants.
A procedure that can be repeated.
For example, a researcher may arrange the same puzzle task for every group and observe cooperation.
When covert observation may be suitable
Covert observation may reduce the likelihood that awareness changes behaviour.
However, researchers must consider whether:
Consent can be obtained.
The behaviour occurs in a public setting.
Privacy is protected.
the observation could cause harm.
Debriefing is practical.
The scientific value justifies concealment.
The classification does not itself settle the ethical decision.
When overt observation may be suitable
Overt observation makes it easier to:
Obtain informed consent.
Explain the study.
Protect the right to withdraw.
Use recording equipment openly.
Ask follow-up questions where appropriate.
Debrief participants.
However, awareness may alter behaviour.
When participant observation may be suitable
Participant observation may help the researcher:
Understand the group’s routines.
Experience the social context directly.
Observe behaviour that outsiders might not see.
Build relationships with group members.
Interpret interactions using contextual knowledge.
However, participation may affect:
Objectivity.
Note-taking.
Attention to all group members.
The researcher’s influence on behaviour.
When non-participant observation may be suitable
Non-participant observation may help the researcher:
Remain focused on recording.
Observe several people at once.
Maintain distance.
Use a standardised checklist.
Reduce the conflict between joining in and collecting data.
However, an outside observer may not fully understand the context or meaning of behaviour.

Writing an effective distinction
A distinction should describe both terms directly.
For example:
A naturalistic observation takes place in the environment where the behaviour would ordinarily occur, whereas a controlled observation takes place in a setting or situation arranged by the researcher.
This is stronger than writing:
Naturalistic is normal. Controlled is in a laboratory.
The improved answer:
Uses precise terminology.
Avoids assuming controlled observations need a laboratory.
Explains the basis of the distinction.
Effective covert-overt distinction
In a covert observation, participants are unaware that their behaviour is being observed for research. In an overt observation, participants know that the observation is taking place.
Effective participant-non-participant distinction
A participant observer joins the group or activity being studied, whereas a non-participant observer remains separate and records behaviour without joining in.
Applying observational terminology
Scenario 1
A psychologist watches children during their usual playground break. The children and school know that observations are taking place. The psychologist remains beside the playground and does not interact.
Classification:
Naturalistic.
Overt.
Non-participant.
Scenario 2
Volunteers enter a research room and complete a standardised group task. They know that their interaction is being filmed. The researcher joins each group as a team member.
Classification:
Controlled.
Overt.
Participant.
Scenario 3
A researcher works temporarily in a shop while secretly studying how staff respond to difficult customers.
Classification:
Naturalistic, if ordinary shop activity is observed.
Covert, because staff do not know the research purpose.
Participant, because the researcher joins the workplace.
Scenario 4
Participants attend a specially arranged waiting-room task. They are not told that helping behaviour is being observed. The researcher watches using a recording and does not enter the room.
Classification:
Controlled.
Covert.
Non-participant.
This procedure would require careful ethical consideration because participants are unaware of the observation.

Naturalistic does not mean covert
Participants may know that their ordinary behaviour is being studied.
For example, pupils may consent to overt observation during a normal lesson.
Controlled does not mean overt
A controlled situation may be arranged without participants knowing which behaviour is being observed.
Participant does not mean covert
A researcher can openly join a group whose members understand the research.
Non-participant does not mean covert
An observer may sit openly at the side of a room.
Naturalistic does not mean non-participant
A researcher can join an existing group within its ordinary setting.
Controlled does not mean experimental
A researcher may arrange and standardise an observation without manipulating an IV.
These distinctions are essential in scenario questions.
