The British Psychological Society

The code provides a framework that helps psychologists:

Ways of dealing with consent
Informed consent
Participants are given relevant information and actively agree to take part.
This is the clearest approach where the research can be described without undermining its purpose.
Presumptive consent
A similar group of people is asked whether they believe the proposed procedure would be acceptable. The researcher assumes that the actual participants would probably make the same decision.
Presumptive consent may help when informing the actual participants fully would reveal the aim.
However, the views of one group may not perfectly represent the views of the actual participants.
Prior general consent
Participants agree in advance to take part in a range of studies, including some in which the full aim may not be revealed initially.
The agreement should make clear the general type of research to which participants are consenting.
This does not give researchers unlimited permission to use any procedure. Participants still require protection and the ability to withdraw.
Retrospective consent
After the true nature of the study has been explained, participants are asked whether they consent to their data being used.
This gives participants an opportunity to reject the use of their data once they understand the full purpose and procedure.
Retrospective consent occurs after participation, so it does not remove any distress already experienced during the study.
Deception
Deception occurs when participants are deliberately misled or important information about the investigation is withheld.
Deception may involve:
Giving a false explanation of the study’s purpose.
Hiding the true hypothesis.
Using misleading task instructions.
Presenting a situation as genuine when it has been arranged by the researcher.
Failing to reveal the role of another person involved in the procedure.
Researchers may consider deception when knowing the true aim would cause participants to alter their behaviour.
Why deception is an ethical issue

Whether people expect to be observed.
What type of information is recorded.
Whether recordings could reveal identity.
Whether the research intrudes into personal matters.
Privacy in observations
Observational research creates particular concerns because people may not know that their behaviour is being recorded.
For example, observation in a private setting may involve a greater invasion of privacy than observation of behaviour openly visible in a public setting.
Researchers should avoid assuming that every behaviour occurring in public is automatically acceptable to record and publish. The sensitivity of the behaviour and the possibility of identification still matter.

Confidentiality
Confidentiality means protecting information provided by participants and preventing unauthorised disclosure.

Anonymity
Anonymity means that a participant’s identity is not attached to the data available for analysis or reporting.
Using participant codes may reduce identification, although a separate record connecting names and codes must also be protected if one exists.
Researchers should not promise complete anonymity if the procedure requires them to retain identifying information. They should describe the protection accurately.
Sensitive questions

Applying ethics to an unfamiliar scenario
Consider the following investigation:
A psychologist recruits students to complete an extremely difficult intelligence test. Students are told that the test accurately measures their ability and that they must finish because their teacher has agreed to the study. Their names and scores are displayed on a classroom noticeboard. The test has actually been designed to be impossible, but this is not explained afterwards.
Several ethical issues are present.
