What is peer review?
Peer review is the process through which psychological research is assessed by other experts working in the same or a closely related area.
The researchers who assess the work are known as peer reviewers. They consider whether the investigation has been designed, analysed, interpreted and reported to an acceptable scientific standard.
Peer review usually takes place before decisions are made about:
Publishing a research report.
Providing funding for a proposed investigation.
Requiring the researcher to revise the work.
Rejecting work that does not meet the required standard.
Peer review is therefore part of the wider scientific process. It provides an opportunity for research to be examined critically before it becomes part of the published body of psychological knowledge.
