UCAS Timeline 2027: Month-by-Month Application Guide

Applying to university is much easier when you know what needs to happen and when.

You do not need to choose your course, write your personal statement and complete your UCAS application in one frantic weekend. In fact, spreading the work across several months gives you more time to research your choices, strengthen your application and avoid missing an important deadline.

This month-by-month UCAS timeline takes you from the beginning of Year 12 through to starting university in autumn 2027.

It is written for students applying for 2027 entry, including students planning to take a gap year and apply for deferred entry.

These are the national UCAS dates. Your school or college is likely to set an earlier internal deadline so that teachers have time to check your application, add predicted grades and complete your reference. A completed application cannot be submitted without a reference.

January 2026: Start Thinking About University

You do not need to know exactly what you want to study yet.

January is a good time to begin exploring your options without placing pressure on yourself to make a final decision.

Start by thinking about:

• Which school or college subjects you enjoy

• Which topics you explore outside lessons

• Whether you prefer practical or academic learning

• Whether you have a particular career in mind

• Which subjects you are likely to meet the entry requirements for

• Whether university is the right route for you

Try looking at several different degree subjects, including some you may not have encountered at school.

For example, someone who enjoys biology might also consider biomedical science, neuroscience, pharmacology, environmental science or public health.

Your January tasks

• Make an initial list of possible degree subjects.

• Complete careers and course-interest activities.

• Speak to teachers about your academic strengths.

• Begin researching the careers linked to different courses.

At this stage, you are exploring rather than committing. A messy list of ideas is absolutely fine.

February 2026: Research Degree Courses

Once you have identified a few possible subject areas, begin looking at what the courses actually involve.

Do not choose a degree based only on its title. Courses with similar names can include very different modules, teaching methods and assessment styles.

When comparing courses, look at:

• Compulsory modules

• Optional modules

• Exams and coursework

• Practical or laboratory work

• Placement opportunities

March is a good time to check whether your current qualifications and subjects match the courses you are considering.

University entry requirements may include:

• A-level grades

• BTEC or T Level requirements

• Specific A-level subjects

• Admissions tests

Requirements can differ significantly between universities offering apparently similar courses.

For example, one psychology course may require a science subject, while another may accept a wider range of A levels. One computer science course may require A-level Mathematics, while another may not.

On 28 April 2026, the UCAS search tool begins displaying courses for 2027 entry. This allows you to investigate the courses available for your application year.

You can now begin comparing specific universities more seriously.

Think about:

• Accommodation

• Student support

• Distance from home

League tables can provide useful information, but they should not make the decision for you. A university with a slightly lower overall ranking may offer a course, location and learning environment that suit you much better.

UCAS undergraduate applications for 2027 entry open on 12 May 2026.

You can register, begin entering information and send your application to your school or college for checking. However, completed undergraduate applications cannot be submitted to UCAS until 1 September 2026.

There is no prize for completing everything on the first day. Use the application opening as an opportunity to understand the form and identify any information you need to find.

June 2026: Attend Open Days

June is one of the busiest months for university open days.

Open days help you understand things that are difficult to judge from a prospectus, including:

• How the campus feels

• The quality of teaching facilities

• Accommodation options

• Travel around the university

• The surrounding town or city

• The atmosphere among current students

• Whether you can imagine living there

Attend subject talks and ask questions about course content, contact hours, assessment, placements and graduate opportunities.

Your June tasks

• Attend in-person or virtual open days.

• Visit the department where your course is taught.

• View more than one accommodation option.

• Speak to current students.

• Record your impressions immediately after each visit.

Try not to judge a university entirely by the weather, the free tote bag or whether you happened to meet one particularly enthusiastic student ambassador. Open days are useful, but your decision should be based on the complete picture.

July 2026: Build Your Supercurricular Evidence

By July, you should have a clearer idea of the subject you want to study.

Use the summer to explore that subject beyond your normal lessons. These activities are often called supercurriculars because they extend your academic interests beyond the school curriculum.

Examples include:

• Reading books or academic articles

• Listening to subject-related podcasts

• Watching university lectures

• Completing an online course

• Attending a summer school

• Entering a competition

• Conducting a small research project

• Visiting a museum, court, laboratory or public lecture

• Completing relevant work experience

• Exploring a current debate within the subject

The activity itself is only the starting point. Universities are interested in what you learned, how it influenced your thinking and what questions it encouraged you to explore next.

UCAS Conservatoires applications for 2027 entry open on 9 July 2026. Conservatoire applicants can register, pay and submit their applications from this date.

Your July tasks

• Complete one or two meaningful supercurricular activities.

• Record what you learned from each activity.

• Continue attending open days.

• Narrow your university shortlist.

• Begin preparing for any admissions tests.

Quality matters more than quantity. One experience that you discuss thoughtfully is more useful than a list of ten activities you cannot explain.

August 2026: Draft Your Personal Statement Answers

August is an excellent time to write your first personal statement draft.

The UCAS personal statement is now divided into three questions:

1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?

2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for this course or subject?

3. What else have you done outside education to prepare, and why are these experiences useful?

Your answers share an overall limit of 4,000 characters, including spaces. Universities read the three sections together as one complete personal statement.

Do not worry about fitting within the character limit immediately. Your first draft should focus on collecting your strongest evidence.

Your August tasks

• Create notes for each of the three questions.

• Select your strongest academic examples.

• Explain what you learned from each experience.

• Connect your experiences to the course.

• Draft your answers in a separate document.

Avoid filling your statement with vague claims such as “I have always been passionate about science.” Show your interest through specific experiences, ideas and reflections.

September 2026: Complete and Submit Your Application

Completed undergraduate applications can be submitted to UCAS from 1 September 2026.

Before an application can be submitted, all sections must be completed, the reference must be added and the application fee must be paid or waived.

Students applying through a school or college usually send the application to their centre first. A teacher or adviser then checks it, adds predicted grades and completes the reference before sending it to UCAS.

Your school may set an internal deadline in September, October, November or December. Follow that deadline rather than assuming you have until the national UCAS deadline.

October contains two important application deadlines.

1 October: conservatoire music deadline

Most UCAS Conservatoires music applications must be submitted by 18:00 on 1 October 2026. Dance, drama and musical theatre courses may have different deadlines, so applicants must check individual conservatoire requirements.

15 October: Oxford, Cambridge and clinical course deadline

Applications for the following must normally reach UCAS by 18:00 on 15 October 2026:

December 2026: Complete Final Application Checks

December should be your final checking month if you are applying to courses with the main January deadline.

Do not plan to finish your application during the Christmas holidays unless your school has specifically agreed to this. Teachers may not be available to check your form or complete a reference while the school is closed.

January 2027: Main UCAS Application Deadline

The equal consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses is 18:00 on 13 January 2027.

Applications received by this deadline must receive equal consideration from course providers. Applications can still be submitted later, but universities are not required to consider them equally, particularly when a course is already full.

The same date is the deadline for most undergraduate conservatoire dance, drama and musical theatre courses, although applicants should check individual course information.

By February, you may have received some university decisions.

UCAS Extra opens on 25 February 2027. It may be available if you used all five choices and are not holding an offer. Extra lets you apply to one additional course at a time.

May 2027: University Decisions and Offer Replies

May contains two major dates for undergraduate applicants.

5 May: first main reply deadline

If you receive all your university decisions by 31 March 2027, you must normally reply by 5 May 2027, unless you are using Extra. Offers may be declined automatically if you miss your deadline.

12 May: university decision deadline

Universities must normally make decisions by 12 May 2027 on applications submitted by the 13 January equal consideration deadline.

Once you accept your offers, focus on your exams. Your application has done its job, but your qualifications may still determine where you study.

June 2027: Final Offers and Late Applications

If you receive all your decisions by 12 May 2027, your reply deadline is normally 2 June 2027, except where you are using Extra.

The other important date is 30 June 2027 at 18:00. Applications received by this point are sent to universities and colleges in the normal way. Applications submitted after this time are automatically entered into Clearing.

July is one of the busiest months in the UCAS cycle.

The final day to add a UCAS Extra choice is 1 July 2027.

2 July: Clearing opens

UCAS Clearing opens on 2 July 2027, and available courses begin appearing in the UCAS search tool. You can use Clearing when you are not holding a university place and a suitable course has vacancies.

14 July: final provider decisions

Universities must normally make decisions by 14 July 2027 for applications submitted by 30 June.

21 July: final main undergraduate reply deadline

If you receive all your decisions by 14 July, you must normally reply by 21 July 2027. This includes applicants using Extra.

August is when most students discover whether they have met the conditions of their university offers.

At the time of writing, UCAS has not included the main 2027 UK qualification results dates in its published 2027 key-date timeline. Check your school, awarding organisation and UCAS nearer the time rather than relying on a provisional date.

On Results Day, your UCAS application might show:

The final deadline for submitting a 2027 entry undergraduate or conservatoire application is 18:00 on 23 September 2027.

However, universities are not required to give a late application equal consideration. Competitive courses may already have received enough suitable applications to fill their available places.
