Vygotsky proposed that cognitive development takes place through social interaction with people who possess greater knowledge or skill. These Vygotsky’s theory A-Level Psychology revision notes explain the zone of proximal development, scaffolding and the gradual internalisation of socially shared knowledge.
Unlike Piaget’s child as an independent explorer, Vygotsky described the child as an apprentice whose thinking is shaped by language, culture and guidance from other people. The AQA specification explicitly requires knowledge of Vygotsky’s theory, including the zone of proximal development and scaffolding.

Social interaction comes first
Vygotsky proposed that many cognitive abilities first appear between people.

Over time, the child begins saying these instructions aloud to themselves.

Internalisation
Internalisation is the process through which socially shared knowledge becomes part of the child’s independent thinking.
The child does not simply memorise another person’s answer.

Once internalised, the child can use the knowledge without immediate assistance.
Example of internalisation

This demonstrates internalisation because:
The strategy begins as the teacher’s external instruction.
Leo uses the language to guide himself.

The child as an apprentice
What does the apprentice comparison mean?
Vygotsky described the child as an apprentice.
An apprentice develops skills by working alongside someone with greater knowledge or experience.

The difference is that Vygotsky gives social partners a much more central role.
Cultural tools
What is a cultural tool?
A cultural tool is a resource developed and transmitted by a society that helps people think, communicate or solve problems.
Examples include:
Language.
Writing systems.
Number systems.
Diagrams.
Maps.
Calendars.
Technology.
Scientific concepts.
Problem-solving strategies.
These tools are not invented separately by every child.
They are passed between generations through social interaction.
Different cultures develop different tools
The knowledge needed in one cultural setting may differ from that needed in another.
For example, a child’s everyday learning might emphasise:
Reading written maps.
Navigating using environmental landmarks.
Using digital technology.
Calculating quantities during trading.
Remembering oral histories.
Producing traditional crafts.

Piaget interpreted much childhood self-directed speech as evidence of egocentrism.
He believed the child was not fully adapting speech to another person’s viewpoint.
Vygotsky interpreted it more positively.

The zone of proximal development
What is the ZPD?
The zone of proximal development, usually abbreviated to ZPD, is the gap between:

AQA defines the ZPD as the difference between current unaided ability and potential performance with support.
The three levels of performance
A task can be placed in one of three broad areas.

Current ability
Current ability is what the child can do independently.
This is the child’s existing level of competence.
For example, a child may independently be able to:
Add single-digit numbers.
Read a simple sentence.
Complete a four-piece puzzle.
Build a tower of six blocks.
If the child can already perform the task unaided, the task is not within the ZPD for that skill.
Potential ability
Potential ability is what the child could achieve with effective support.
For example, the same child may be able to:
Add two-digit numbers when prompted to carry a digit.
Read an unfamiliar word when helped to identify its sounds.
Complete a larger puzzle when shown how to find corner pieces.
Build a more stable tower when shown how to arrange the base.
The difference between current and potential ability forms the ZPD.
A task below the ZPD
A task below the child’s ZPD is already mastered.
For example:
A child who can independently add two-digit numbers is asked to calculate 2+1.
The task is unlikely to extend cognitive development because it requires no new strategy or assistance.
A task within the ZPD
A task within the ZPD is challenging but achievable with guidance.
For example:
The child cannot independently calculate 24+18, but succeeds after the teacher reminds them how to exchange ten units for one ten.
The task reveals the child’s potential rather than only their current independent performance.
A task beyond the ZPD
A task beyond the ZPD remains too difficult even with appropriate support.
For example:
A young child who is beginning simple addition is asked to solve an advanced algebraic proof.
Explanations and prompts may not be enough because the child lacks the necessary foundation.
Effective teaching therefore requires identifying a task that is neither:
Already mastered.
Completely inaccessible.

Why the ZPD matters
It measures potential
An ordinary assessment may identify only what a child can currently do independently.
Vygotsky argued that cognitive development is understood more completely when psychologists also investigate what the child could achieve with help.
Two children might receive the same independent score but have different ZPDs.

This differs from a static assessment that measures independent performance only.
Learning can lead development
Vygotsky proposed that well-designed learning can move development forward.

Through internalisation, supported performance becomes independent ability.

The more knowledgeable other
What is a more knowledgeable other?
A more knowledgeable other, often abbreviated to MKO, is a person who has greater knowledge or skill than the learner in relation to a particular task.
Possible MKOs include:
A parent.
A teacher.
An older sibling.
A coach.
A more capable peer.
A younger person with greater skill in a particular area.
The important feature is task-relevant expertise, not age or authority.
The MKO is not always an adult
A classmate may act as an MKO if they understand a task more successfully.
For example:
One pupil demonstrates how to organise data in a table for another pupil.
The more knowledgeable pupil provides support despite being the same age.
Expertise is task specific
A person may be the MKO in one situation but not another.
For example:
A teacher may guide a pupil through an essay.
The pupil may guide the teacher through a new software tool.
An older sibling may teach cycling.
A younger sibling may demonstrate a game.
Knowledge is relative to the skill being learned.
More knowledge does not guarantee effective teaching
An expert may understand a task but be poor at explaining it.
Effective assistance also requires the MKO to:
Recognise the learner’s current ability.
Provide suitable support.
Monitor progress.
Adjust the help.
Withdraw it at the right time.
This is the process of scaffolding.
Scaffolding
What is scaffolding?
Scaffolding is temporary and adjustable support provided by a more knowledgeable other to help a learner complete a task within their ZPD.
The term is based on the temporary framework used around a building.
A physical scaffold:
Supports construction.
Is adjusted as the building develops.
Is removed when no longer required.
Similarly, cognitive scaffolding:
Supports learning.
Changes as competence develops.
Is gradually withdrawn.
Aims to produce independence.
AQA mark schemes describe scaffolding as a framework provided by an expert and gradually removed as the child becomes more competent.
Key features of scaffolding
Effective scaffolding is:
Temporary: it is not permanent assistance.
Contingent: it depends on what the child currently needs.
Adjustable: the level changes with performance.
Responsive: the expert monitors the learner.
Gradually withdrawn: assistance decreases as competence increases.
Directed towards independence: the goal is autonomous performance.
Scaffolding is not simply giving the answer
Giving a child the completed answer may allow the task to be finished but may not develop understanding.
Scaffolding helps the learner participate in the reasoning process.
For example, instead of saying:
“The answer is 42.”
a teacher might ask:
“Which operation do you need?”
“What should you calculate first?”
“Can you use the method from the previous question?”
“Which part is causing difficulty?”
The learner remains cognitively active.
Forms of scaffolding
AQA’s 2025 mark scheme recognises several practical forms of scaffolding, including demonstration, verbal instruction, pointing, reinforcement, prompting and the later withdrawal of support.
Demonstration
The MKO shows the learner how to perform part of the task.
For example:
A parent demonstrates how to place the first two blocks so that a tower has a stable base.
The child can observe the strategy before trying it.
Verbal instruction
The MKO explains what the learner should do.
For example:
“Begin by finding the common denominator.”
Instructions may become less detailed as the learner gains competence.
Pointing or directing attention
The MKO draws attention to a relevant feature.
For example:
A teacher points towards the capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.
This helps the learner notice information they previously overlooked.
Prompting
The MKO gives a cue rather than a full solution.
For example:
“What happened the last time the character made that decision?”
A prompt encourages the learner to retrieve or apply existing knowledge.
Questioning
The MKO asks questions that structure the learner’s thinking.
For example:
“What do you already know?”
“What might happen next?”
“How could you check?”
“Is there another strategy?”
Questions can guide without taking control of the task.
Feedback
The MKO provides information about performance.
Feedback may:
Confirm a correct strategy.
Identify an error.
Suggest a next step.
Encourage the learner to review their work.
Reinforcement and encouragement
Praise or encouragement may help the learner:
Remain motivated.
Persist with difficulty.
Attempt another strategy.

Simplifying the task
The MKO may temporarily reduce the task’s complexity.

Separating a problem into stages.

As understanding increases, the learner takes responsibility for more of the task.
Withdrawal
The MKO reduces assistance once the learner becomes more competent.
For example:

Withdrawal is essential.
Without it, the learner may become dependent on assistance.
Contingent scaffolding
What does contingent mean?
Contingent support is support that depends on the learner’s immediate performance.
The MKO responds to evidence from the child.
For example:
If the child succeeds, support is reduced.
If the child struggles, support is increased.
If the child makes a particular error, help targets that error.
If a prompt is enough, a full demonstration is unnecessary.
The scaffolding rule
A useful rule is:
more difficulty → more supportgreater competence → less support
The support should not remain fixed throughout the task.
Too little support
When support is insufficient:
The task may remain beyond the child’s reach.
Errors may continue.
The child may become frustrated.
The strategy may not be understood.
Too much support
When support is excessive:
The MKO may complete most of the task.

Independent thinking may be reduced.
The child may appear successful without understanding.
Dependence may develop.
Effective scaffolding provides the minimum help needed to move the learner forward.
Worked example: building a block tower
Consider the following scenario:
Mario cannot build a stable tower independently. His mother shows him how to make a wide base, points to an appropriate block and asks which block he should use next. She praises his successful choices. As Mario improves, she stops pointing and eventually sits back while he finishes alone.
This closely reflects an AQA 2025 application question.
More knowledgeable other
Mario’s mother has greater skill in constructing the tower.
She acts as the MKO.
Zone of proximal development
Mario cannot initially build the stable tower independently.
He can complete it with assistance.
The tower-building task is therefore within his ZPD.
Demonstration
His mother shows him how to build a wide base.
Pointing
She draws attention to a suitable block.
Prompting
She asks which block should be used next.
Reinforcement
She praises successful choices.
Withdrawal
She gradually reduces assistance and eventually sits back.
Internalisation
Mario takes increasing control of the strategy.
The supported performance becomes independent ability.
Worked example: reading
Salma can read familiar short words independently but cannot decode a new multisyllabic word. Her teacher asks her to divide it into smaller sections, models the first sound and encourages Salma to blend the remaining sounds. On the next word, the teacher gives only one prompt.
Current ability
Salma can read familiar short words independently.
ZPD
She can read the more difficult word with structured help.
Scaffolding
The teacher:
Breaks the task into parts.
Models one element.
Prompts the blending strategy.
Provides encouragement.
Contingency
The teacher gives less help on the next word because Salma has improved.
Development
With repeated supported practice, Salma may internalise the decoding strategy and use it independently.
Worked example: peer tutoring
Isaac understands how to create a scattergram, while Priya is unsure where to place the variables. Isaac explains the axes, demonstrates one plotted point and then watches while Priya plots the remaining values.
More knowledgeable other
Isaac acts as the MKO because he possesses greater task-specific knowledge.
Scaffolding
He:

Withdrawal
Isaac does not plot every point.
He withdraws after providing sufficient support.
Potential development
