What is cognitive development?
Cognitive development is the development of mental processes involved in:

What is a schema?

A schema can be thought of as a mental structure or organised package of knowledge.

Schemas are more than simple definitions
A schema contains connected knowledge rather than one isolated fact.
A child’s schema for a dog might include:

The schema helps the child identify unfamiliar animals and predict how a dog may behave.

The earliest schemas may be based on actions.

Assimilation
What is assimilation?
Assimilation occurs when a person interprets a new experience using an existing schema.
The existing schema is not changed substantially.
The new information is fitted into what the child already understands.

For example:
A child has a schema for dogs. The child sees a new breed of dog and recognises it as a dog.
The new animal differs from dogs previously encountered, but it fits the existing schema closely enough to be assimilated.
Assimilation adds information to a schema
Assimilation may add examples or details to an existing category.
Suppose a child’s dog schema is based on a large brown dog.
The child later encounters:
A small white dog.
A dog with long hair.
A dog with short legs.
The child recognises all three as dogs.
The schema has been used successfully and may become broader through the new examples.
Everyday examples of assimilation
Toy schema
A child has learned that pressing buttons on a toy produces a sound.
The child receives a new toy with buttons and immediately presses them.
The child assimilates the new toy into an existing button-pressing schema.
Cup schema
A child understands that cups are containers used for drinking.
The child encounters a different-shaped cup and uses it correctly.
The new object is assimilated into the existing cup schema.
School schema
A child has a schema for classrooms involving:

On entering a new classroom, the child recognises the setting and knows broadly how to behave.
Assimilation can produce errors
Assimilation is not always accurate.
A child may apply an existing schema too broadly.
For example:
A child sees a cow and says, “Dog.”
The child has noticed features fitting the dog schema:
Four legs.
Fur.
Movement.
A tail.
However, the child has assimilated the cow incorrectly.
This mistake creates an opportunity for accommodation.
Why assimilation is useful
Assimilation allows children to understand new experiences without rebuilding their knowledge every time.
Without assimilation, every unfamiliar object would be treated as completely unrelated to anything previously encountered.
Assimilation therefore:

Accommodation
What is accommodation?
Accommodation occurs when an existing schema is altered, or a new schema is created, because new information does not fit the child’s current understanding.

Accommodation requires greater cognitive change than assimilation.
Revising an existing schema
Return to the child who calls a cow a dog.
An adult may explain that:
The animal is a cow.
Cows are much larger than most dogs.
Cows make a different sound.
Cows have hooves rather than paws.
Cows are farm animals.
The child must modify their understanding.
They may:
Narrow the dog schema.
Create a separate cow schema.
Develop a broader schema for animals containing both dogs and cows.
This is accommodation.
Creating a new schema
Sometimes a new experience cannot be understood by adjusting an existing schema slightly.
A completely new schema may be required.
For example:
A child whose animal knowledge includes only pets encounters a fish for the first time.
The child learns that fish:
Live in water.
Have fins.
Breathe differently from land animals.
Do not have legs.
A new fish schema may be created.

Drinking container
A child has a schema that drinks always come in cups.

Rules

Both are needed.
A child cannot accommodate every new experience because their knowledge would become fragmented and inefficient.

What is adaptation?
Adaptation is the overall process of adjusting cognitive structures to understand the environment.
Assimilation and accommodation are the mechanisms through which adaptation occurs.

The term does not mean that assimilation and accommodation always occur in equal amounts.
Some experiences fit existing schemas and require assimilation.

The child’s schemas become better suited to interpreting reality.

Equilibrium
What is equilibrium?
Equilibrium is a state of cognitive balance.

The experience fits the child’s existing understanding.
The child remains in equilibrium.

What is disequilibrium?
Disequilibrium is a state of cognitive imbalance produced when new information conflicts with an existing schema.
The child experiences a mismatch between:

A child believes that all objects sink in water. A piece of wood floats.
The event does not fit the existing schema.
This produces disequilibrium.
What might disequilibrium feel like?

Examiner hint: Do not define equilibration as simply “learning something new”. Explain what becomes unbalanced and how balance is restored.

Examiner hint: In application questions, link every concept to a specific detail in the scenario. For example, identify the child’s original schema, the conflicting event and the revised understanding.

Examiner hint: The 2025 examiner report noted that successful students connected schema development clearly to the children described in the question. General descriptions without links to the scenario were less effective.
Examiner hint: Keep the answer within the part of Piaget’s theory named by the question. In 2025, some students discussed concepts from later developmental stages when the question focused specifically on the sensorimotor stage.
Examiner hint: Do not write about gender in-groups when the question asks about Piagetian schemas. A gender schema is one specific type of organised knowledge, while Piaget’s concept applies across cognitive development.
Examiner hint: Explain mistakes psychologically. Instead of saying “the child got it wrong”, identify the existing schema being applied and whether accommodation is required.
