Item A
Some crime prevention strategies make greater use of surveillance and policing in particular locations. Such strategies may result in some groups being watched and stopped more frequently than others.
Other approaches to crime prevention attempt to reduce social problems such as deprivation and marginalisation.
Crime prevention strategies may contribute to differences in recorded crime between ethnic groups.
Applying material from Item A, analyse two ways that crime prevention strategies may contribute to ethnic differences in recorded crime.

Item B
The media provide images of desirable lifestyles and consumer goods. Some sociologists argue that these images may create feelings of relative deprivation. Media content may also provide audiences with models of behaviour that can be imitated.
The media may also amplify deviance by exaggerating particular events or groups. However, other sociologists argue that the causes of crime are mainly found in social inequalities, social control or the organisation of society rather than in the media itself.
Applying material from Item B and your knowledge, evaluate the view that the media are a major cause of crime and deviance.

Quantitative methods can produce numerical data that allow sociologists to identify patterns and make comparisons between groups. Such methods may also make it possible for research to be repeated.
Qualitative methods can provide detailed accounts of people's experiences and meanings. However, the smaller scale and less standardised nature of some qualitative research may make comparisons and generalisations more difficult.
Applying material from Item C and your knowledge, evaluate the view that quantitative methods are more useful than qualitative methods for studying society.
