What is a schema?

What is a gender schema?

Gender schema theory focuses mainly on how children organise and use this information.
The source of gender stereotypes is examined more directly through modelling and reinforcement and social representations of gender.
Schemas are expectations, not necessarily accurate descriptions
A gender schema contains what the child believes about gender.
It does not necessarily contain an accurate description of every person.
For example, a child may believe:
Only men can be firefighters.
Only women look after babies.
Boys do not enjoy dancing.
Girls do not play football.
These statements may reflect stereotypes encountered by the child rather than genuine limitations on people’s behaviour.
Schemas influence how the child interprets the world, even when their expectations are inaccurate.
The development of gender schemas
Basic gender identity
Martin and Halverson proposed that children begin developing gender schemas after achieving a basic gender identity.
This usually occurs at approximately 2 to 3 years of age.
At this stage, the child can label themselves as belonging to a gender category.
For example:
“I am a boy.”
“I am a girl.”
Once this label has been formed, the child begins actively searching for information about the category to which they belong.
The child asks, either explicitly or implicitly:
“What do people like me do?”
This means basic gender identity is enough to begin organising behaviour.
The child does not need to have achieved gender constancy first.
AQA’s 2025 mark scheme states that by approximately three years, children have developed gender identity and actively search their environment for information about their own gender.
Active information seeking
Children do not attend equally to everything in their environment.
Once they have identified their own gender, they become particularly interested in information connected with that group.
They may pay greater attention to:
Same-gender children.
Same-gender adults.
Activities associated with their own gender.
Media characters who match their gender identity.
Toys and clothes labelled as appropriate for their group.
This information is added to the child’s gender schema.
The process is called self-socialisation because the child actively directs their own learning.
Self-socialisation
Self-socialisation occurs when children use their gender identity and schemas to guide their own development.
The child does not depend entirely on adults telling them what to do.
Instead, the child may independently:
Observe same-gender models.

What is an in-group?
An in-group is a social group to which a person believes they belong.
Within gender schema theory, the child’s in-group is the gender category with which they identify.
For example, a child who identifies as a girl may begin constructing a “girl schema”.
This schema contains information the child has learned about:
What girls supposedly look like.
How girls supposedly behave.
Which toys girls supposedly choose.
Which activities girls supposedly enjoy.
Which roles women supposedly perform.
In-group information
Children actively seek information about their gender in-group.
A child may pay particular attention to:
What same-gender children do during play.
How same-gender adults behave.
Which characters are presented as similar to them.
Which behaviours receive approval within their group.
Which activities appear to belong to their group.
This information is more likely to be:
Noticed.
Rehearsed.
Remembered.
Added to the schema.
Used to guide behaviour.
In-group bias
In-group bias is the tendency to focus more strongly on one’s own group than on other groups.
In gender schema theory, the child may:
Watch same-gender children more closely.
Remember more information about their own gender.
Prefer activities associated with their own group.
Discuss same-gender behaviour more frequently.
Use the in-group as a guide for personal behaviour.
This does not necessarily involve hostility towards other groups.
It mainly involves increased attention to information viewed as relevant to the self.
Example of an in-group schema
Three-year-old Ruby identifies as a girl. At nursery, she watches the girls playing with dolls and discusses their games when she gets home. She pays little attention to the boys playing with construction toys.
Gender schema theory would explain that:

Out-group schemas
What is an out-group?
An out-group is a group to which the individual does not believe they belong.
For a young child who identifies as a girl, boys may initially be treated as an out-group.
For a child who identifies as a boy, girls may initially be treated as an out-group.
Information about out-groups may be viewed as less personally relevant.
Attention to out-group information
Young children may show little interest in traits and activities associated with an out-group.
They may:
Pay less attention to out-group models.
Remember less about out-group behaviour.
Rarely discuss what out-group children do.
Avoid activities classified as belonging to the out-group.
Disregard information that does not expand their in-group schema.
The in-group schema therefore tends to develop first.
Out-group knowledge still develops
Gender schema theory does not claim that children know nothing about other genders.
As children have more experiences, they begin to develop knowledge about:

Other groups.
The relationships between groups.

However, information about the child’s in-group is initially especially important because it helps answer:

Example of out-group processing
Yusuf identifies as a boy. When asked about nursery, he describes everything the boys did but cannot remember which games the girls played.

For example, a child who believes football is a “boy activity” may pay particular attention when boys play football.
The same child may fail to notice girls playing equally skilfully.
Schema-consistent information
Schema-consistent information fits the child’s existing beliefs.
Examples might include:
A male firefighter.
A female nursery teacher.
A boy playing with cars.
A girl playing with dolls.
These examples fit traditional gender stereotypes.
Because they are consistent with the schema, they may be:
Processed quickly.
Understood easily.
Remembered accurately.
Used to strengthen the existing schema.
Schema-inconsistent information
Schema-inconsistent information conflicts with the child’s expectations.
Examples might include:
A female firefighter.
A male nursery teacher.
A boy playing with dolls.
A girl repairing a car.
A child with a rigid schema may:
Pay less attention to the information.
Forget it.
Treat it as an exception.
Change the information during recall.
Misremember the person’s gender.
This makes the schema resistant to change.
Selective exposure
Schemas may also affect which situations children choose.
A child may select:

How schemas influence memory
Memory is reconstructive
Memory does not operate like a perfect recording.
People reconstruct past information using:

Schemas.

A gender schema can therefore change how gender-related events are remembered.
Better memory for schema-consistent information
Children may remember gender-consistent information more accurately because it:

Distortion of schema-inconsistent information

Martin and Halverson investigated children’s memory for gender-consistent and gender-inconsistent information.
Children were shown people taking part in activities that either:

When recalling inconsistent information, children sometimes distorted it so that it became consistent with their gender expectations.

Gender schema theory would explain that:
Alex has formed an in-group schema.
Cars and garages have been placed within this schema.
Dolls have been classified as out-group activities.
The schema guides Alex’s choice.

Behaviour can strengthen the schema
Once the child chooses a schema-consistent activity, several things may happen.

Gender schemas and social learning
Schema-guided behaviour may interact with social learning.

A child’s schema directs attention towards a same-gender model.

The rigidity of gender schemas
Increasing rigidity
As the child’s gender schema develops, ideas about gender may become increasingly organised and, for a period, more rigid.

A child should avoid activities associated with another group.
AQA’s 2025 mark scheme recognises that by approximately six years, gender understanding may become more rigid and fixed, with the in-group schema developing first.
Why schemas can become rigid
Schemas may become rigid because:
Children prefer clear categories.
Consistent examples are easier to process.
Inconsistent examples receive less attention.
Adults and peers may reinforce stereotypes.
Media often repeats gendered representations.
Children use their own group as a guide to acceptable behaviour.
Rigid schemas simplify the social world but may restrict behaviour.
Later flexibility
As children gain broader experience, they may encounter repeated examples that challenge stereotypes.
For example:
Women working in traditionally male occupations.
Men performing caring roles.
Children enjoying activities associated with different genders.
Non-stereotypical media characters.
Repeated and meaningful counterexamples may encourage schemas to become:

Applying gender schema theory
Consider the following scenario:
Three-year-old Leela spends most of her time dressing up and playing with a toy kitchen. She ignores her brother’s cars and garage. When asked about nursery, she describes the girls and their games in detail but says very little about the boys.
This scenario appeared in the 2025 AQA examination. A full application could include the following points.

She is likely to have developed a basic gender identity as a girl.
This allows her to begin constructing a gender schema.
In-group schema
Leela has developed a “girl schema”.
It contains information she associates with girls and their behaviour.

She ignores the cars and garage because she associates them with an out-group.
Her schema therefore guides her toy preferences.
Selective attention
Leela pays greater attention to girls at nursery.
She notices their activities because she is actively expanding her in-group knowledge.
Out-group information
She says little about the boys.
Boys are treated as an out-group.
Information about them receives less attention and is therefore less likely to be recalled.

Gender schema theory and Kohlberg’s theory
Martin and Halverson’s theory and Kohlberg’s cognitive-developmental theory are both cognitive explanations of gender development.
They agree that:
Children actively construct gender knowledge.
Thinking affects gender-related behaviour.
Gender understanding changes with age.
Children categorise themselves and other people.
Cognitive development cannot be reduced entirely to reinforcement.
However, they disagree about when gender understanding begins guiding behaviour.
