What are internal mental processes?

What is a schema?

How schemas develop

Use four stages:

  1. Identify the previous experience or knowledge.


    Explain what may have contributed to the schema.

  2. State the expectation within the schema.

  3. Identify the new information.

  4. Explain how the schema affects processing.


    Show how the information is selected, interpreted or remembered.

⚠️ Avoid simply writing that the person “has a schema”. You must explain what the schema contains and how it influences behaviour.


What is a model?

A model is a simplified representation used to describe and explain a process.

Cognitive psychologists use models because internal mental processes cannot be observed directly.

A model may show:

  • Different parts of a mental process.

  • The relationship between those parts.

  • The order in which processing occurs.

  • How information moves through a system.

  • The role performed by each component.

Models help psychologists organise complex ideas into a clear and testable explanation.


Models are representations

Worked example: interpreting cognitive data

Using the data above:

Difference in mean recall = mean for Condition A − mean for Condition B

Difference = 12 − 8

Difference = 4 details

Participants in Condition A recalled an average of four more details than participants in Condition B.

This result would be consistent with the explanation that an appropriate schema supported the organisation or interpretation of information.

It would not prove that the schema was the only possible cause. Researchers would need to consider the design, controls and alternative explanations.


Models and inferences work together

Models and inferences perform related but different roles.

  • A model represents how a mental process may be organised.

  • An inference is a conclusion about mental processing based on observable evidence.

The relationship can be represented as:
