Quantitative and qualitative research is a fundamental part of AQA A-Level Sociology. What does AQA require you to know?
Within Theory and Methods, AQA requires students to examine:
quantitative and qualitative methods of research
the distinction between quantitative and qualitative data
different sources of sociological data
the relationship between sociological perspectives and methods
theoretical, practical and ethical considerations affecting research.
This lesson concentrates on the first two points. Later lessons develop the individual methods through questionnaires [Questionnaires], interviews [Interviews], participant and non-participant observation [Participant and non-participant observation] and other sources of sociological evidence.
Quantitative research
Quantitative research is research that produces information that can be expressed in numerical form.
Quantitative data might therefore involve:
numbers
totals
proportions
percentages
frequencies
comparisons between groups.
The important point is that the sociologist has information that can be counted, measured or compared numerically.
Example
Imagine a sociologist investigating students' experiences of education. The researcher records how many students report spending different amounts of time on homework each week.
The resulting information could be expressed numerically:

This is quantitative data because the results are expressed as numbers.
The example is illustrative rather than a finding from sociological research. Its purpose is simply to demonstrate the distinction required by the specification.
What can quantitative data tell sociologists?
Quantitative data can be particularly useful when a researcher wants to identify patterns or differences.
For example, a sociologist could use numerical data to examine whether:
one group reports an experience more frequently than another
a behaviour appears common or uncommon within the group studied
responses differ between categories of participants.
Because the information is numerical, different sets of results can also be compared clearly.
However, knowing how many people gave a particular response does not necessarily tell the sociologist much about why they responded in that way.
That distinction helps explain the usefulness of qualitative research.
Qualitative research
Qualitative research produces non-numerical information about people's experiences, views, meanings or accounts of social life.
Instead of reducing a response mainly to a number or category, qualitative data may preserve more of what a participant says, does or communicates.
It can therefore provide more detailed information about how people understand their social world.
Example
A researcher studying students' experiences of education might ask students to explain how they feel about the amount of homework they receive.
One student might describe:
how homework fits around responsibilities outside school
which types of homework they find useful
why they sometimes choose not to complete it
how they believe teachers respond to incomplete work.
These detailed accounts would produce qualitative data.
Again, this is an illustrative example rather than a claimed research finding.
What can qualitative data tell sociologists?
Qualitative data can help researchers investigate:
people's experiences
people's interpretations of situations
the meanings people attach to their behaviour
differences between individual accounts
complex aspects of social life that may be difficult to express only as numbers.
The emphasis is therefore often on detail and meaning rather than measuring how frequently something occurs.
This becomes particularly important when you study interpretivism and sociological methods [Interpretivism and sociological methods].
Quantitative data and qualitative data compared
The distinction concerns the form of the data produced, not simply the topic being investigated.
The same sociological issue could potentially be studied using either approach.

📌 Remember: quantitative does not mean "good research" and qualitative does not mean "better detail in every situation". Their usefulness depends on what the sociologist is trying to discover.
The same topic can produce different types of data
A common mistake is to assume that particular sociological topics are automatically quantitative or qualitative.
They are not.
Consider a sociologist investigating pupils' experiences of school.
A quantitative approach
The researcher could record the number of pupils who select each response to a set of questions.
The researcher could then compare numerical patterns between groups.
A qualitative approach
The researcher could collect detailed accounts in which pupils explain their experiences in their own words.
This might reveal meanings or differences that are difficult to capture through numerical categories.
The topic is the same, but the nature of the evidence produced is different.

Quantitative methods and quantitative data are not identical ideas
It is useful to distinguish method from data.
A research method is the approach used to obtain sociological evidence.
Data are the information produced or used by the researcher.
AQA explicitly requires students to distinguish quantitative from qualitative data as well as examining quantitative and qualitative methods.
You should therefore be able to write accurately about both:
The researcher uses a particular method to obtain data.
Do not use "method" and "data" as though they mean exactly the same thing.
Choosing between quantitative and qualitative approaches
Neither approach is automatically the most useful.
A researcher interested primarily in measuring differences or identifying numerical patterns may find quantitative data useful.
A researcher interested primarily in understanding people's experiences and interpretations may find qualitative data useful.
This means that evaluation should always consider the purpose of the investigation.
Quantitative research may be useful because:
numerical findings can show patterns clearly
groups or responses can be compared numerically
the amount or frequency of something can be expressed precisely.
However:
numerical categories may provide limited information about people's explanations or meanings
a numerical difference tells the researcher that a difference exists, but may not explain it fully.
Qualitative research may be useful because:
it can provide detailed accounts
participants' meanings and experiences can be explored
complex differences between people's experiences can be retained.
However:
detailed accounts are not always easy to summarise numerically
they may be less useful where the main research aim is to measure the frequency or numerical distribution of something.
A strong evaluation therefore avoids claiming that one type of evidence is universally superior.
Quantitative and qualitative approaches within the wider course
This distinction becomes important throughout Research Methods.

AQA assesses:
AO1, knowledge and understanding
AO2, application of sociological knowledge and research methods to issues
AO3, analysis and evaluation, including presenting arguments, making judgements and drawing conclusions.
For this topic, that means you should be ready to do more than simply state that quantitative data involve numbers.
You may need to:
identify whether information is quantitative or qualitative
explain what the distinction means
apply it to a research situation
explain why one approach might be useful
recognise a limitation
reach a justified judgement about which approach suits the research purpose.
💡 Exam tip: If a question asks about the usefulness of an approach, do not stop after describing it. Explain what the type of data allows the sociologist to discover, then consider what that approach may fail to reveal.

Common Mistakes ⚠️
Mistake: Saying quantitative data simply mean "facts"
Why this is incorrect: The defining feature relevant here is that quantitative data are numerical. Whether a claim should be treated as a fact is a different issue.
How to improve: Use a precise definition such as: "Quantitative data are data expressed numerically."
Mistake: Saying qualitative data are just "opinions"
Why this is incorrect: Qualitative data can contain detailed accounts of experiences, meanings and social situations. Describing all qualitative evidence as opinions is too narrow.
How to improve: Refer to non-numerical, detailed information and explain what it enables the researcher to investigate.
Mistake: Confusing research methods with data
Why this is incorrect: A method is used to obtain evidence. The evidence produced or used is data.
How to improve:
Ask yourself two questions:

Mistake: Assuming the research topic determines whether data are quantitative or qualitative
Why this is incorrect: The same topic may be investigated in ways that produce numerical data or detailed non-numerical accounts.
How to improve: Focus on what information has actually been collected, not simply what the researcher is studying.
Mistake: Claiming quantitative research is always better
Why this is incorrect: Quantitative evidence may be useful for measurement and comparison, while qualitative evidence may be more useful for understanding detailed experiences and meanings.
How to improve: Tie your judgement to the aim of the research.
Mistake: Giving a strength without explaining why it matters
Why this is incorrect: Writing "quantitative data are numerical" only describes the data. It does not evaluate their usefulness.
How to improve: Develop the point:

Question 5: Two differences (4 marks)

Question 6: Balancing education and responsibilities (4 marks)
A developed answer should:
identify the detailed nature of qualitative evidence
apply this specifically to experiences outside school
explain why this would help the sociologist.

This could help the sociologist understand differences in people's experiences that would not necessarily be revealed simply by recording numerical totals.

A strong response should demonstrate accurate knowledge of both approaches and develop an evaluation rather than simply producing two definitions.

Neither quantitative nor qualitative research is automatically more useful. Quantitative evidence is particularly helpful where sociologists want to measure and compare patterns, whereas qualitative evidence is valuable where the aim is to understand experiences and meanings in greater detail. The most useful approach therefore depends on what the research is intended to discover.
